The Evolving 2020 Open Streets Movement, or What if We Threw Out the Rule Book and Everything Was Fine? — Strong Towns
“So here’s the thing you should watch as this unfolds: see if any significant problems or backlash arise. If they don't—or if they're easily resolved—then maybe we never needed all the red tape all along. Because here’s the thing: setting up some tables in parking stalls, or a tent on the sidewalk, is the kind of easily reversible, low-cost, low-risk experiment that we should be conducting in our cities constantly—both private entities like restaurants, and the public sector responsible for maintaining public space.”
strongtowns.org It’s a shame it took a global pandemic for towns and cities to discover the benefits of low-cost, low-risk experiments.

When a Walk Is No Longer Just a Walk
"Confronting the cool air outside, I reached up to pull on my hoodie, then thought better of it. As I walked, I mentally rehearsed the script of what I would say if I was stopped by a police officer or an overzealous neighborhood watchman questioning my whereabouts."

Beautiful day to do some user counts on Governor Street for
Isn't Providence just amazing sometimes? 🖤🚴♀️
More people than ever are relying on delivery services for food and goods – but it doesn't always have to be by car (don't forget we are still in the middle of a climate crisis)! And it *definitely* doesn't have to be from a major third-party app (like GrubHub and DoorDash that often use restaurant names without their knowledge or consent, and take a huge chunk of profits). If you live in Providence and want/need to and get your groceries delivered in a low-impact way by local residents, check out these three bicycle delivery services:
1. Urban Greens Co-op Market is now offering a delivery extension of their curbside pickup program – by bike! Rhode Island Pride, Harvest Cycle Compost, Mission Electric Bike, and the Providence Streets Coalition are teaming up to connect immunocompromised residents of Providence to groceries from Urban Greens. They are currently offering bike delivery for a $10 fee to zip codes 02907, 02906, and 02903. Delivery days are Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 am and 12 pm until capacity is reached, but they hope to see the program grow! Order here: https://urbangreens.com/curbside-pickup-order-form/
2. You can get your "Knock it Off" blend White Electric Coffee from DASH delivery inc, a bike messenger company. (They're also delivering the T-shirts from Frog and Toad!) Orders placed by 10am the day before will be delivered by Dash to all Providence addresses. To make this deal even sweeter use the code DASH at check out and White Electric chip in on the delivery fee! Only $3.50, make sure you choose the Dash shipping option. Order here: http://whiteelectriccoffee.com/blog/2020/3/27/providence
3. Rebelle Artisan Bagels has launched weekend bagel deliveries with Mission Electric Bike in 02906, completely contactless on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays! Order here: https://www.rebelleartisanbagels.com/delivery

activetowns.org Season 1 Episode 16: WHO KNEW A NOVEL CORONAVIRUS WOULD ONCE AGAIN HAVE US FIGHTING TRAFFIC Talking with Peter Norton about some of the parallels of the dawn of the motor age and our current pandemic driven push for more people-oriented space on our streets.
These love notes have been so nice to read.
"At first blush it's simply gorgeous, at second thought it's sad.
It's a state asset that the state ignores.
People travel from all over the country to film there, but there's no entrance for neighbors.
At first blush it's a crowning achievement, at second thought it's a decaying mission in need of more allies."
