Throughout November we've been profiling the 2021 Victorian Community History Award winners. There's only a few more to go. Today is the Oral History Award winner (presented with Oral History Victoria)...

🎣 End of an Era: The Last Gippsland Lakes Fishermen by Lynda Mitchelson-Twigg, representing the Gippsland Lakes commercial fishing community, assisted by Nikki Henningham, Leigh Henningham, Tanya King, Donna Squire and Geoff Stanton.

"In April 2020 the long history of commercial fishing in the Gippsland Lakes ended by government decree. End of an Era is a community-based oral history and photography project that combines the expertise of members of the fishing community alongside academic researchers and professional historians and photographers. The interviews and images capture the life histories of the men and women of the Gippsland Lakes fishing industry, and its profound significance for each narrator and for their community. The interview collection is archived at the National Library of Australia where it will be available for future research. The project team curated a travelling exhibition which has been enjoyed in Lakes Entrance, Geelong and Melbourne Docklands, and which comes to Paynesville in the coming months. A beautifully produced website represents the exhibition and visitor responses, and showcases the photographs alongside twelve of the interviews. Each narrator brings the world of commercial fishing to life, from the intricacy of meshing and seining, to the habits of different sea creatures, to the sounds, smells and sights of an environment they love and know so well."

Today was the last day in Lakes Entrance!

It has been a warming feeling to host this exhibit at The old slipway where a World War 1 Memorial fisherman statue carved by local chainsaw artist John Brady overlooks the town and flanked by either side by fishing boats.

It has been privileged to share with east Gippsland locals and visitors over the last week our stories captured while our industry was coming to a close.

Special Thanks to Andrea Lane and her team of volunteers at Float that let us be part of their NGV waterfront program.

While the exhibition may be closing tomorrow in Melbourne, you can catch it over Easter in Lakes Entrance, or in Geelong in May! (Stay tuned for details)

Sometimes we get to write stories that really touch our hearts. The tale of the last of the Gippsland Lakes fishers was one of them.

With a proud history dating back some 150 years, the commercial fishing families (including some pioneering women) pulled up their nets for the final time last year.

Their stories, though, continue with a stunning photographic and oral history exhibition on now in Melbourne. Through magnificent photos by Leigh Henningham (and others), and their own voices captured by historians including Nikki Henningham, their experiences and insights are brought to life.

You can see their faces and hear their stories at Library on the Dock until 18 March. Or visit Lakes Entrance when the exhibition moves there over Easter.

We will be going along, having had the privilege of speaking to the exhibition organisers and fishers for the FRDC magazine FISH (https://www.frdc.com.au/media-publications/fish/FISH-Vol-28-3).
