India has one of the highest global prevalence of anaemia among women of reproductive age (15–49 years). A new study shows that long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) may increase the prevalence of anaemia through systemic inflammation. PM2.5 pollutants are fine inhalable particles with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

According to the study, published in the journal Nature Sustainability in August this year, for every ten micrograms (one-millionth of a gram) per cubic meter of air increase in ambient PM2.5 exposure, the average anaemia prevalence among Indian women of reproductive age increases by 7.23%.

The study says that among PM2.5 species, sulfate and black carbon were more associated with anaemia compared to organics and dust. "Among sectoral contributors, industry was the greatest, followed by the unorganised, domestic, power, road dust, agricultural waste burning and transport sectors," it said.

Meeting clean air targets would reduce such anaemia prevalence among women to 39.5% from 53%. "Our results suggest that the transition to clean energy would accelerate India’s progress towards the ‘anaemia-free’ mission target," the study adds.

Sleep duration is now considered an essential component for ideal heart and brain health, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). The AHA updated Life’s Essential 8™, its checklist which measures eight key areas to determine a person's cardiovascular health. It added sleep duration as an essential measure for optimal cardiovascular health. “The new metric of sleep duration reflects the latest research findings: sleep impacts overall health, and people who have healthier sleep patterns manage health factors such as weight, blood pressure or risk for Type 2 diabetes more effectively,” said AHA president Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, M.D., Sc.M., FAHA. The organisation says the ideal level of sleep required is 7-9 hours daily for adults; 10-16 hours per 24 hours for children aged 5 and younger; 9-12 hours for ages 6-12 years; and 8-10 hours for ages 13-18 years. The other health and lifestyle factors included in the checklist are – nicotine exposure, physical activity, diet, weight, blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure. Cervical Cancer 101 with Dr. Ajit Nambiar
Cervical cancer, which is most frequently diagnosed in women between the age of 35-44 years, is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer. To prevent cervical cancer women are advised regular screening. Girls, starting age 9, can be vaccinated for the prevention of cervical cancer later in life. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), there is evidence to suggest cervical cancer screening can reduce mortality by 80% or more among screened women. Dr. Ajit Nambiar, director & head, pathology and lab medicine, Karkinos Healthcare, talks to us about essential facts we need to know about cervical cancer and the human Papillomavirus (HPV). What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep is essential for our body to repair and recharge. But not getting enough quality and quantity sleep, or sleep disorders can inhibit the process, making us vulnerable to various health conditions. People with sleep apnea experience multiple pauses in breath during their sleep. These can impact the quality of sleep and oxygen supply to the body. According to the American Lung Association, people with sleep apnea may feel daytime sleepiness, irritability, forgetfulness, and are unable to concentrate because of interrupted sleep. Loud snoring is a common symptom as well. The organisation says sleep apnea is associated with a risk of developing conditions like high blood pressure, stroke, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease. #sleepapnea #obstructivesleepapnea #neurologist #sleepspecialist #symptomsofsleepapnea #livingwithsleepapnea #snoring #sleepproblems #sleepissues #lackofsleep #poorsleep #highbloodpressure #hearthealth #sleepdisruptions #womenshealth #femoai #ageing #menopause #mentalhealth #healthyliving #knowyourhealth #OSA #centralsleepapnea

The primary aim of cervical screening is to identify precancerous lesions caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) so they can be prevented from developing into cancer. It can also find cervical cancers at an early stage. During the screening, a small sample of cells is taken from the cervix and checked for high risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause changes to the cells of the cervix. If these types of HPV are found, the sample is checked for any changes in the cells of the cervix. This makes it possible for the changes to be treated before they can change into cancer. Gynecologists can guide women about when to start screening and how often they should be screened. (Women can be periodically tested for HPV, get a pap smear, or get both together (co-testing)): 1. You will be asked to undress from the waist down, behind a screen. You will get a sheet to put over you. 2. You will have to lie on your back with your legs bent and knees apart. 3. A doctor or nurse puts a speculum into your vagina to separate the walls so they can get to the cervix. The cervix is the lower, narrow end of the uterus that opens into the vagina 4. They use a tiny spatula or brush to gently collect cells from your cervix. 5. These are sent to a lab for testing. This shouldn't hurt, but you may feel some pressure or discomfort when the speculum opens inside you. You may also feel light scratching when the cells are collected from the cervix. You may also have light bleeding or spotting after cervical screening. Endometriosis and Fertility with Dr. Abhishek Mangeshikar
Pregnancy does not cure endometriosis and we need to stop giving patients this choice between pain relief or fertility, they are not mutually exclusive. Both goals can be achieved simultaneously. While there may be complications in some cases, most pregnancies can happen with endometriosis, and they can happen naturally. Most of them are also quite uncomplicated and the mother can enjoy the pregnancy as anyone else would and not live under a cloud of fear. -- Dr. Abhishek Mangeshikar, Endometriosis Excisional Specialist, Indian Centre for Endometriosis - ICE Here’s Dr. Mangeshikar talking about everything we need to know about endometriosis and fertility. Menopause and Heart Health: In conversation with Professor Gita Mishra
Let's talk about menopause and heart disease! Here's our second episode of #FemoaiMasterclass on menopause with Professor Gita Mishra. In this episode we talk about how a decline in estrogen production during menopause impacts women's heart health. Dr. Mishra makes some research-based recommendations on what women can do to prevent cardiovascular disease later in life. Research says that 35% of deaths in women worldwide can be attributed to cardiovascular disease, but it is still underdiagnosed, under-reported and undertreated in women. Professor Gita Mishra is internationally recognised for her expertise in epidemiology and women’s health, especially for her work on the links between reproductive characteristics and non-communicable diseases in later life, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. She is professor, Life course Epidemiology; Head, Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Deputy Head, School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland. #femoai #menopause #menopausesupport #menopausehealth #menopausematters #menopauseweightloss #midlife #womenshealth #health #femoaivideos #research #healthresearch #cardiovasculardisease #heart #heartdiseaseawareness #hearthealth
