VocEd
This page is about connecting people to learning options for personal growth and skill building. Respect for everyone.
Be kind and courteous, so no bullying, hate speech or abusive swearing will be tolerated. And whilst feedback is great, be fair with any reviews of courses taken.
I had hoped to be a little further along in the business by now, but that is okay. Life is a learning curve. So I thought that I would post about something I learned today. The humble whipper snipper! I learnt that you don't have to be a trained horticulturalist to use one. Intrigued??? Read on......
My lawn hasn't been mown for close to 18 months now. (For those who know me, you know why, but for those who don't, lets just say that I "lost" the lawnmower.) So my lawn is so long that it needs a combined harvester to get it back into shape. Yep, well....can't afford that. Nor can I afford a lawnmower. Then I had a light bulb moment.
Whipper snipper!!!!
So here is the learning thing. Ladies and gents....you CAN mow your lawn with a whipper snipper. Seriously....yes you can..
I did my research and this is what I concluded.
1. Get an electric rechargeable one - 18v is fine, no pull string to start it (you can really throw your back out one of those), no petrol fumes
2. Get one that doesn't use wire or fishing line, but has plastic blade - no having to worry about the line getting tangled in the grass, easier to control the grass height
3. Whipper snippers are lighter than a lawnmower, so they are very portable and won't require 6 months of body building prior to use
4. You don;t have to fight the grass to get through the 1/2m high weeds - you just aim that thing at the base of the growth
5. You can edge with a whipper snipper whilst you are slashing - nice finish around steps and paving as you go
6. After a bit of practice you can get a fairly even height on the finish
7. The main downside is that the motor will get hot, so you will have to make sure to rest the whipper snipper so it can cool down
Here is a list of equipment you will need aside from the whipper snipper
1. a pair of long pants - to protect from flying debris
2. A long sleeved shirt - slip slop slap people
3. Welly boots - long grass/snakes (this is Oz - you get the picture), and the byproducts of 2 dogs
4. Safety glasses - cos the odd h***y nut will hit you in the head
5. A leaf rake - cos a whipper snipper doesn't have a grass catcher (clean up in stages)
6. The garden waste bin
7. A nice refreshing shower and fresh clothes
8. A glass of grape juice to celebrate the completion of a job well done
I know that it will take me a few days to cut my lawn - not due to the height, more due to the amount of lawn I have (and the thunder storm that rolled through the area), but at least I have started
A heartfelt thank you to all of you who are now following or have liked my page. This is a great start.
I have a question for you though. Have you been able to access my Information page and/or Booking Form that I uploaded. I would love some feedback.
Hi everyone. I have relaunched VocEd as a FB page. As a group, the FB goalposts kept moving and I was finding it harder and harder to maintain. So, tadahhhhh......FB page. It's still a little unwieldy, but at least I can get files uploaded to it now (fingers crossed).
My ultimate aim is to have a website. This will make it easier to upload files. But baby steps first.
To keep the mind nourished education is the key, but not everyone wants to take up a University degree or professional course to do this. For many this type of education requires years of commitment and/or is out of financial reach.
But, you still want to learn something. This is where VocEd steps in to help.
Quite often when someone lists class or workshop on Facebook it is only seen by people who are familiar with that particular person. Or it accidentally comes up your newsfeed – and usually after the event.
VocEd is designed to act as a central point to connect you to vocational education classes and workshops in your area – or further if you are prepared to travel. These classes and workshops are short term and of special interest in nature, run by people who are working in or have an interest/expertise in the field.
