During uncertain economic times, we need to really look at how our design firms are maximizing profitability and a big part of that is product profit margins.

In this episode, I share three reasons for reselling products and what the top four items with the best margins are. I give you a couple of examples of why I used to do it, why I switched my process and the script I use to communicate the necessity of this to your clients.

Your bedroom should be more than just a place to sleep—it's your sanctuary, your retreat from the chaos of the world. Let's dive into crafting a space that gives you comfort and safety.

Here's how:
🌟 Soft Textures, Soothing Hues: Embrace cozy comfort with plush textures and calming colors! Think gentle tones like pastel blues, soft grays, or warm neutrals.
🕯️ Ambient Serenity: Set the mood with soft lighting! Opt for warm, dimmable lights or add a touch of serenity with scented candles.

Your bedroom, your rules! Customize your space to reflect your personality and preferences. Add personal touches—a favorite artwork, cherished photos—to create a space that feels uniquely yours.

A design team can take many shapes. Yes, it takes a team to bring a design project through to the finish line. But not necessarily the team you think.

You don’t need an in-house team of designers and project managers to have success with a design project. Your team is your extended community of trade partners and industry colleagues.

🤔 Let me explain what I mean...

This project ( ) was a true collaboration. 🙌

When I couldn’t figure out how to design my built-in bench with fixed upholstery, I reached out to my design colleagues and asked how they had done it in the past. I collaborated with my upholsterer and my millwork company to come to a great solution.

The custom Roman, blind in the window was designed in combination with a completely new window and size. We worked with our contractor to select the right window to achieve a Great window dressing.

Each design choice was a collaboration between me, my designer besties, and my trades. 🥰

This is why I bring my trade partners onto a project early, before I’ve even designed it, to bounce ideas off of them. They are experts too🙌

If you don’t already have a step like this in your process, I highly recommend you add one.

🥰 We’re only as good as the team that we have collaborating.

I'll be honest, basement renos SUCK. It's a small space with limited access for trades, & too much money goes into the sh*t you don't see. It can be hard to make an impact without breaking the bank.

Here are my designer tips for a smooth basement reno that doesn't break the bank

✨ Do the basement last. If you plan to do your reno in phases, please don't do the basement first! The basement feeds the rest of your house. Plumbing, electrical HVAC etc. You're limiting your reno options in the upper floors if you do the basement first.
✨ Always gut the basement before placing any orders on materials! There can be so much lurking behind those walls. Even though we design everything before demo we never order materials until we know what we want to do is going to work.
✨ Don't forget drainage. Most basements (in Toronto) need backflow access. Don't cover it with flooring to later find that you have no idea where that drain was!
✨ Always measure access before purchasing large furniture. Nothing hurts more than having to undo a beautiful stair rail or drywall to get bulky items downstairs.
✨ Always look for hidden storage opportunities. This is always overlooked! You need more storage than you think... think suitcases, seasonal decor, winter coats and boots, sporting goods, camp supplies etc.

👉 Share your thoughts: Do you LOVE ❤️ or HATE 😭 basement renos?

Refresh your home without a Reno! It’s hard to believe but this beautiful Muskoka Kitchen was part of a larger decorating project. We simply removed some of the upper cabinets, had everything painted, added a new backsplash and lighting, and VOILA. It looks like a brand-new kitchen!

Sometimes you don’t need a complete gut renovation to transform a home. If you have great bones decorating is going to elevate your space.

Good news: at Rebecca Hay Designs we love to decorate!

It might be my favorite part of any design job. The textiles the colors, the patterns… I could go on. If you’re looking to re-decorate your home next year, give us a call. I’d love to learn more about your project.

If you want to stop feeling underpaid & grow your business now, you need to make some changes in your business. Here are 4 ideas to get you started:

✨Always Charge for Your Consultations - You are a professional. If you're giving clients your time and expertise, then you need to be compensated for it.
✨Stop Sharing Your Discounts - You need to pay yourself enough to cover rising interest rates, grow a team, invest in that business course, and attend a business retreat- just to name a few.
✨Increase Your Rates - You are a professional. If you are giving your time and expertise - you need to be compensated for it.
✨Create a New Offering to Compliment Your Core Offering - You can enhance the value of working with you and give clients an opportunity to get a “taste” of what your services are like.

Kids deserve beautiful spaces is too. After all, your home is the backdrop to your memories. And let’s face it, most parents spend an awful lot of time making memories in their kids bedrooms in the early years!

I am also a firm believer that you CAN have beautiful things and have children at the same time. Often I hear people say they don’t want to invest in nice things until their kids are grown. But I am here to tell you that you CAN have it all - nice things and wild kids. 😊

We design rooms that are both beautiful and kid friendly. Maybe it’s because I am a mom of two little kids myself but maybe it’s also just because we love beautiful things.😎

This room:
When we renovated the second floor of our 100 year old Toronto home we replaced the existing wall-to-wall carpet with engineered hardwood. That was my excuse to completely redecorate my son’s bedroom.

Best part, the incredible custom drapery by . Full black-out lining means bedtime is easier on those long summer days.

👉What would you add to your kids bedroom, if anything was possible?

Design inspiration from my trip to San Juan, 🇵🇷

Photos from Rebecca Hay's post 13/10/2023

Whenever I'm at our cottage, surrounded by nature, I'm reminded of life's simple beauties.

The rustling leaves the sun reflecting on the water – they all hold tiny design lessons.

These trips are meant for downtime with my family, but nature has its way of inspiring me subtly as a design firm owner, and I love the experience.😍

Being there, laughing with my kids, and chatting with my husband, I find design ideas rooted in many moments.

Where do you derive inspiration from as a design firm owner?

Let's get something straight: As a design firm owner, you offer a luxury service!

Typically, "luxury" is not a "need" but a "want"; therefore, you are not appealing to a potential client's necessities; rather, you are focusing on their desires.

This is when it becomes an emotional decision!👌

As humans, we're wired to feel more excited and rewarded when we have the possibility of getting what we dream of.

As a designer and luxury service, one of our greatest tools for attracting clients is learning and understanding our client's desires in life and offering that solution front and center.✅

If you're looking to learn where designers find their clients, listen to the latest episode, where I dive into the best tips for attracting clients to you!
