Forging a 3lb hatchet
So it's been a while since I've posted or even forged anything. So here's what I did today. The one on the left is a wrought iron hammer, roughly based on the Swedish style crosspeen with my own style added on. It has spring steel forge welded on for the faces, and etched in instant coffee. Handle to come soon.
The other was a complete failure, it was a canister filled with 2 different steel powders in a 3d printed pattern with the aim to create cool designs with the different steels. I forgot to vent this can, and when it came time to heat up, it became a gr***de, sending coal and hot powder everywhere, and also the can flying across the yard. No injuries thankfully.
I have not forgot about any orders that I have, I don't have tons of time anymore to forge them all fast, but I am currently working on the orders I do have when I can get to it.
Hard at work with my new to me coal forge
Been a minute since I've posted, but here's my most recent mishap... forging a hatchet for an order, but had these neat cracks happen during the heat treating process. Mistakes are common especially in my smithy, but can't learn how to do stuff right without messing stuff up sometimes!
Hate to see this one go, but happy to see it has a new owner!
Electro etching a project. Using stencils, salt water, 9v battery, wires and a q tip let's me etch my mark into my work. It eats the metal away until there's a nice hammer visible on the steel
Busy day today. Seax handle is setting, as well as handle for a leather knife. Starting on some kind of garden tool or something, idk what it is or will be lol
Very first knife I did right around a year ago, made from a horseshoe
Another knife done. Made from 80crv2 steel, bamboo scales and brass/copper pins
Quick 45 minute project before shutting down. Turned a horseshoe into a heart
Getting closer. Thanks to Shawn Gordon Blacksmithing for showing me how to do the rock texturing!
Working on a seax today for an order. .. should look pretty sweet when finished!
Got some forge welds cookin in this billet. 80crv2 core, 15n20 on each side if the core, then mild steel then 15n20 then mild steel on the outside!
Here's one that took a few days to complete. Forged the machete from a railroad spring clip and did a simple paracord wrap.
All done! Hard to see in the pictures, but there is a good contrasted pattern between the roller chain and steel powder. Keep an eye out at the Montague Fire Department fundraiser dinner this month, it needs a new home!
It's almost done. Just need to head over to Shawn Gordon Blacksmithing and get it etched to make that pattern come back out.
This kitchen knife will be donated to the Montague Fire Department to be auctioned or raffled off on February 19th during the fireman's association fundraiser dinner.
It will be waiting for its new owner to take it to its new home!
Little garden trowel
Need a tool? Make a tool!
Garden trowel made from a large bandsaw blade, handle made of hickory stained q little purplish, with a quail electroetched on.
Little toasty from that block of steel
15n20 steel and 1080 steel layered damascus knife, made with deer antler for handle and brass pins.
Working on a bearded hatchet, it's up for sale with no takers yet so comment or send a message to claim it!
Hard at work forging Christmas presents.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Oh and start putting your orders in, I have some now but plenty room for more!
