1️⃣ Along with the recall cue , your dog should ALSO have a strong attention cue as well as a less - formal " come " cue . These two skills are crucial supplements in a plan to build a strong , reliable recall !
2️⃣ Determine and use your dog's HIGHEST value reward ! This might be a hot dog , an awesome toy , or even a cue that begins a favorite game .
3️⃣ Start out indoors or on - leash ! One of my favorite tools for practicing off - leash recall is actually a 30 - ft leash , which helps to simulate freedom but still allows for safe management , Gradually build up to more challenging contexts !
4️⃣ NEVER use the recall cue to " trick " your dog into coming . The key to a strong recall is to use it when it's followed by great things ! In the rare event that you MUST recall your dog for something unpleasant in an urgent situation , you'll be glad that your dog feels no conflict about responding .
5️⃣ Don't overuse it ! Recall should be an exciting , rare opportunity for a jackpot . I myself try to use my dog's recall only once per day , now that it's been conditioned . This also helps to ensure that I'm very judicious about WHEN I'm using my dog's recall ! In addition , this prevents the feeling that I'm " nagging " my dog with frequent requests . I want pure enthusiasm each time !

The option of being able to hide is important in helping reduce a cat's stress . Does your cat enjoy playing in boxes , or does your cat like having a box to hide in when stressed or concerned about something going on in the household ? If you're bringing a new cat into the home , provide lots of hiding options .

When cats bump their forehead against you . it's called bunting. Cats have scent glands on the face and it's a very common social behavior for one cat to bunt the head of another feline buddy. This isn't just a scent exchange but also an affectionate display .

In a multicat household don't risk increasing stress by placing food bowls side by side, or having one big bowl for all to share. Cats aren't social eaters.
Even if cats are friends, there can be added stress at the feeding station. Don't insist your cats share one food bowl or that they eat right next to each other. Give them a little space. So tell me how does your cat react to food sharing?
