Child led learning extending number awareness into teen numbers.
Mr 5 loved cars and his goal was to extend his counting and number recognition from 10 to 11-20.
We created a car park game where his cars were numbered and had corresponding parking spaces and included this into our play to explore a variety of maths based concepts and promote mathematical thinking.

Learning intentions
-Teen number recognition
-Counting patterns.
-Problem solving e.g Having all cars parked with one in the wrong spot.
-Number before and after e.g which car comes before 9 and after 9
-Counting on from a given number e.g number 8 has arrived which car comes next
-Informal addition and subtraction. 10 cars parked and 2 drove out how many left.

Child led learning. When we use children's natural curiosities, creativity and interests to guide the learning process learning becomes natural, easy and fun!

Some examples of activities that I planned as part of my play based learning for Mr. 5 based around a natural interest in Lego.

-3 Billy Goats gruff Lego puppet show (oral story telling)
-Lego powered balloon car and flying fox for Lego people (STEM)
-Lego bracelet for Mum's birthday present (fine motor skills)

Visual schedules are a great support for ALL children. They add routine, predictability and structure to the day. I offer personalized visual schedules in my services or as one off product.

Mr. 5 was a Lego lover and was inflexible on other activities being introduced into our day. I used visual schedule to have 'learning time' session (teacher led play based activities) and 'his choice time'. He became open and receptacle and flexible to a broader range of activities.

A beautiful spent working on a community mindfulness art project for our yoga Centre 🧶🎨. How did you bring some creative flair to your weekend?
I love using art as a tool for children to combine creativity and mindfulness. It also allows time to relax and build deeper connections.

Exploring natural interest in evaporation process 💦☀️

An extension for this child's learning was to set up an experiment with a tub with a measured amount of water. Leave it in the sun all day and remeasure the amount to test their 'hypothesis' (That evaporation only occurs at night).

An example of my ability and passion for adapting learning for individual interests in my role as Outback Governess🙂
Mr year 1 loved stock yards and mustering. I encouperated his skip counting practice into playing stock auctions during a maths session.
"Big heaffa going for 2,4,6,8,10,12, $14000 dollars! SOLD". 🤣
Extension skip counting by 5's and 10's gradually increasing the sale amount and use play money to practice counting out in groups of 2.
