Happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of all enslaved African Americans in the U.S., and is a day to celebrate African American culture and freedom. Though there is still improvement to be made for black Americans in the U.S., Robin + Rose celebrates black achievement with these figures of black excellence. Let us know who we missed in the comments.
1. Isra Hirsi: Founded the US Youth Climate Strike. She also was featured on Fortune's 40 Under 40 in Government and Politics. |
2. Claudette Colvin: Before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955, there was a brave 15-year-old who chose not to sit at the back of the bus. That young girl was Claudette Colvin.
3. Marley Dias: When she was 11, Marley started the Twitter hashtag to bring attention to the lack of representation black girls had as protagonists in books. She also published her own activist guidebook: Marley Dias Get It Done: And So Can You! |
4. Ruby Bridges: The first African American child to desegregate an all-white elementary school in Louisiana in 1960. She is now the chair of the Ruby Bridges Foundation. |
5. Chadwick Boseman: Chadwick Boseman received international fame for playing The Black Panther and was the first black actor to headline a Marvel film |
6. Mae Jemison: Mae Jemison is a doctor, engineer, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space in 1992. |
7. Simone Biles: Simone Biles is the gymnast with the most World medals and most World gold medals. She is the first American female gymnast to win a World medal in every event, and the first female gymnast since 1988 to win a medal in every event at a single Olympic Games or World Championships. |
8. Minnie Riperton: Minnie Riperton is known as the Queen of the Whistle Register.
9. Flo Jo: Florence Delorez Griffith Joyner holds the 200 m world and Olympic record and 100 m world record. She gained popularity for her record-setting athleticism and personal style.
