Crafternoon making visuals for my clients π
I love making visual resources because they can do things that my therapy does not.
Visual Aids can:
π Simplify routines and complex instructions to make them easier to understand
π Help clients to communicate how they feel
π Can reduce anxiety surrounding what comes next which helps to make clients to feel more secure
π Can help facilitate better communication through utilising pictures and symbols

A belated Happy Speech Path Week! I celebrated by hanging out with these wonderful Speechie private practice business owner colleagues, and spreading the word about all the ways we can communicate to the GPβs and Registrarβs at my workplace!
Our role as therapists is to build capacity so that the children we work with can become more independent, develop skills and participate in their communities. β¨
We can ask coaching questions like "What do you think helped your child to do that" to support the 'people around the child' to identify which strategies are working for the child, and to continue to use these in the child's natural settings.

How amazing is this research by Speechies at ! π€© A few weeks ago I got to attend their webinar on mapping out phonology of bilingual children to determine if they had a speech sound disorder that needed intervention or not. They have some great resources on the CSU website to guide us speechies to transcribe the phonetics of other languages π π
π The questions we ask parents matter. π Listening to the caregivers and families we work with is so important to get to the crux of what is happening. Ask "How important is that to you" to get a sense of whether this is something the parent wants help with today, or something that they just need to get off their chest. Including families in goal-setting and intervention planning is crucial for child's progress. πͺ A question such as "What would you like to get out of today's therapy session" shows parents that they are they play an active role in their child's intervention. This will lead to greater buy-in and lead to better outcomes for children π π π₯

β¨ Empower and build capacity by using coaching questions. β¨
A question such as "How does that compare between now and 6 months ago?" helps parents to reflect and recognise positive changes in their child and in the family environment ποΈ
Follow this up with: "What do you think helped your child to get here?" to open up a discussion with the family about what tools, strategies and resources π πΌ have allowed for this progress to be made.
Then you can encourage families to continue doing the things that are helping their child make continual progress. π¬ π
A coaching approach that upskills caregivers means that children can get the therapy support everyday in all interactions π π

What is a communication partner? A communication partner is anyone who talks or interacts with you.
Communication is always a two-way process. Both people involved in a communicative interaction are responsible for successful communication.
For a person with communication difficulties, their communication partner is even more important. Learn more about supporting communication by visiting the Communication Hub website: https://communicationhub.com.au/
Love this app for helping parents support their young children with change, transition and anxiety. It comes with pre-written social stories and visual schedules that are editable so parents can personalise it, put in their own photos and write their own!
π¦ Courageous Kids is a new app helping young children manage change and new situations with social scripts.
This form of storytelling describes a context, skill, achievement or idea in a clear and direct way, making it easy for children to grasp.
No more worrying about your child's anxiety when they visit the dentist or attend a birthday party β with Courageous Kids, you can create personalised social scripts tailored to your child's needs. π€
Plus, you can also create visual plans for your child to follow, complete with a visual timer, AND these visual plans can also be printed out!
The app is designed to empower the caregivers of young children to directly reduce their child's anxiety and set them up for success with new experiences. It is available to download for free in the Google Play and App Store now.
The app's developer is looking to continuously improve Courageous Kids and welcomes feedback to help improve functionality.
For more information, or to download the app, visit the Courage Kids website: https://www.courageouskidsapp.com/social-stories/
