Live Like Caleb

Caleb was one of those kids who played everywhere. Need a shortstop, catcher, pitcher, third baseman, whatever, he was your guy. It didn’t matter to him. He loved the game and he was pretty good wherever you put him.

Due to this, one day I was in my workshop making out the day’s lineup and a young Caleb walked in and said, “what do you want me to be today?” An interesting question to say the least. I knew he was asking which position but I saw an opportunity so I replied, “I want you to be one for one today” and went back to what I was doing.
I knew this wouldn’t sit well with Caleb, and it didn’t. He quickly replied, “one for one? You want me to get one at bat, get a hit, and then stop playing???” At that point I stopped what I was doing, looked him in the eye and explained... “every pitch that is thrown I want you to be one for one. Be mentally focused every pitch, every time, all day long. Be mentally focused and competing if you’re pitching, if you’re defending, if you’re hitting, or if you’re cheering from the dugout. When the pitch is made, it’s over. That pitch is done. It’s time to be one for one on the next pitch. “

Caleb took it to heart to say the least but I sort of knew/hoped that “one for one” would work its way back around for another conversation. Eventually it did and I got to explain the One who came for one. The One who set us free and allows us eternity in heaven.

We purchased Caleb’s tombstone recently... man, really NOT something a parent ever wants to say... as I sit here broken and devastated I’m truly thankful that Caleb’s “one for one” became Caleb’s “one for One”.

What will we be today? Will we be focused and determined? Will we be mentally prepared, not “take plays off”? Will we be one for one??? More importantly, will we be one for One?

The purpose of this page is to promote upcoming fundraisers. Kimberly and I intend to raise money through different activities to support local charities and possibly fund a scholarship all in Caleb’s name. All money raised will be used 100% for charity.
