Itā€™s been an absolutely crazy few weeks. Work has been insanely hectic, as I start to wrap up the academic year. Iā€™ve been trying to slowly tick off a long list of things that have piled up over the past few months. One of the key things on my list was to figure out my summer plans.

Believe it or not, I still have no idea what Iā€™m doing for the summer. One moment Iā€™m like Iā€™m going to London (UK) via somewhere in Europe, the next moment Iā€™m heading to Atlanta (US), the next moment Iā€™m like Iā€™m going to Karachi (Pakistan). Itā€™s boiling hot in Dubai & Iā€™d rather get a break from this city. I have no clue where Iā€™m going for summer. Iā€™d love to know what the rest of you are thinking of doing.

Even though Dubai is an amazing city and thereā€™s sooooo much to do here. For now Iā€™d rather get a break from the heat while I have a month off. So the question is where should I sail/fly off to?

This is my first post after almost 2 months of a social media semi-detox. While I did not deactivate my account, I turned my notifications off and stopped posting. It really made me realise how social media distracts you from the world and prevents you from sitting with yourself.

Back in March I had so many exciting things lined up to share with you all including Jessā€™s interview, photoshoot and a collaboration with a company that produces hearing aids. The semi-detox was mainly caused due to a lot of things piling up on stress, followed by Ramadan & Eid. To top it off I injured my back and itā€™s when it starts impacting the body that we decide to take action. I tried to make a comeback right after Eid, but I was deeply disheartened by everything happening in Palestine. Iā€™ve been lucky enough to visit Jerusalem and experienced how magical that holy land is. I really just couldnā€™t believe what was happening and felt so helpless. My prayers have been with Palestine this whole time.

During my social media semi-detox I was reminded of the reason I started this page. I was also reminded that I made a promise there would never be another young Areej going through some of the struggles I did. I remember how motivating those words sounded at the time. And then I realized, itā€™s all about timing and no one comes first but you. I needed to put myself first. ā€œIf youā€™re not there for yourself today, how can you be there for someone tomorrow.ā€

It wasnā€™t just the promise I made a year ago which triggered me into finally coming back. It was the faith I had in myself of what I could accomplish despite all the fear. If we can see in ourselves the small miracles others see in us, what might be possible? So often it is lack of courage that holds us back from taking the risk, that keeps us stuck in the comfort zone, stuck in complacency, stuck thinking now itā€™s the time.Youā€™ll never know unless you take the leap of faith!

Here I am taking mine and hoping to land between the starsā€¦ āœØ

We are bilingual. We speak the language of indoctrination, but our mother tongue is the language of imagination. When we use the language of indoctrination with its ā€œgood and badā€, ā€œright and wrongā€, ā€œshould and shouldnā€™tā€ - we are activating our minds. Thatā€™s not what weā€™re going for here. Because our minds are polluted with our past programming. In order to go beyond our past programming, we need to captivate our imaginations. Our minds are excuse makers; our imaginations are storytellers. So instead of asking ourselves whatā€™s right and wrong, we must ask ourselves:

What is true and beautiful?

Then our imagination rises inside us, thanks us for finally consulting it after all these years, and tells us a story.... the lights are on you, now whatā€™s your story?

A strong woman is one who feels deeply and loves fiercely. Her tears flow as abundantly as her laughter. A strong woman is both soft and powerful, she is both practical and spiritual. A strong woman loves, forgives, walks away, lets go, tries again, and persevere. No matter what life throws at her. Thereā€™s nothing like a woman whoā€™s been broken & knocked down, she always comes back stronger! Happy womanā€™s day šŸ’• @ Cove Beach Dubai

In most societies deafness is associated with the word ā€œdumbā€, especially profound deafness. Just because someone doesnā€™t speak, it doesnā€™t mean they canā€™t & it certainly doesnā€™t mean theyā€™re dumb. Lately Iā€™ve been noticing how common it is for people to be underestimated due to having a hearing loss. This often leads to the individual having to work extra hard to prove the society wrong. People with a hearing loss may not hear things, but they see and feel things that others donā€™t. Our other senses are far stronger & our hearing loss is a super power. Whatā€™s your super power?šŸ’„

Do you notice something new on my ear? I got the tragus piercing. Since I was a teenager I always wanted to get it done but, because I used to wear hearing aids at the time in both ears I couldnā€™t. Now that I have a cochlear implant in on the left ear & thereā€™s no ear moulds involved. This weekend I finally gathered the courage to head to and get it done. I feel like it really completes the whole look to my cochlear implant design šŸ˜

Iā€™ve been so blessed to call Dubai home since August 2019. For those of you who donā€™t know, Iā€™ve lived in Rainy London all my life. It was always a dream of mine to experience living in another country & Dubai always seemed to be a good option. It was mainly the sunshine that attracted me to moving here and I canā€™t stress enough what an impact weather makes on everything. Plus I never thought Iā€™d say this but Iā€™ve kind of been missing the rain a little lately. I donā€™t plan to spend the rest of my life in Dubai, although since Covid Iā€™ve kind of stopped making any life plans. Just live in the moment, wait to see the next chapters of life unfold and see where they lead to... if you know me, you know how spontaneous I can be! @ Dubai Creek Harbour

If you want to achieve your goal or simply just see the sunshine, you have to weather the storm. The more storms you weather, the more sunshine you bring into the lives of others and that sunshine always finds its way back to you. What does this sunshine mean for you? šŸŒž

A wise person once said ā€œno matter what life throws at you - what you make out of it is up to you.ā€ Here I am stepping out there not seeking to be in the spotlight but seeking for a spot to light - to help & inspire. I know all the struggles Iā€™ve been through & growing up I had no one who could relate to them. I donā€™t want the future generations to have to experience the same. Itā€™s time for a change! šŸ’« @ Camden Town

A lot of you messaged me asking for a close up of the design of my cochlear implant, so I decided to put this video together. I even added a voice recording of one of my own poems in the background called & the background music is November from . How perfectly did it all just seem to sync together. Iā€™ve been using the little spare time I have to experiment with content. I would love to hear what you all think of this little clip šŸ’Ž šŸ’• PC: ABC Media Production

Anyone who knows me knows how extra, carried away and OTT I can get only ā€œsometimesā€ with organising and planning. So let me walk you down the idea behind this look as I kinda put a lot of effort into it. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

To start with I went for a fusion look by adding bits and bobs that represent me. This poncho style kameez has been sitting around in my wardrobe for two years and Iā€™m so glad I finally got the opportunity to wear it. This kameez was designed by my mother in Karachi (the city my family is from in Pakistan), the fabric was from Dubai (where I currently reside) and the leather leggings are from Topshop in London (the city I was born and brought up in). šŸ‡µšŸ‡° šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ šŸ‡¦šŸ‡Ŗ

Now let's talk about whatā€™s going on around my ear. Not sure if you noticed but the use of colours was inspired by a peacock, Iā€™ve always adored peacocks! Think of it this way - the jumka earring on my ear is the main body of a peacock and then behind my ear you start to notice the colours of the peacock feather. See the different gemstone shades of green, blue and I added on pearls. All the focus was going on my ear and the magnetic part on my head of my cochlear implant was feeling kinda left out, so I added the sahara (silver chain) and it easily stayed attached to the magnet as its metal. šŸ¦š

Finally, Iā€™ve owned the heels Iā€™m wearing for more than 10 years and they are so freakin comfortable from šŸ‘

I would love to hear what you guys think. Would you like to see more design ideas and find out how I design them? šŸ’• PC:ABC Media Production

Iā€™m so excited to introduce you all to the Hear Areej Video-cast which will be launching on Friday 12th February. We all know how podcasts have been all hyped lately, but thereā€™s a real accessibility issue with them. It can be a struggle for people with a hearing loss to access this information due to needing more visual cues. Iā€™ve created this video-cast not only for the hearing loss world, but also to provide the hearing world an insight into peopleā€™s stories from a different perspective. To keep up to date head over to www.hearareej.com - watch this space!

Since accessibility is so key šŸ”‘ weā€™ve collaborated with to ensure Pakistan Sign Language interpretation & captions are provided.

Iā€™d also like to take a moment to thank the amazing graphics designer for creating this artwork šŸ˜

Since Iā€™ve been asked for more outfit inspiration on this page Iā€™ve just had soooo many ideas popping through my head & I clearly havenā€™t been able to hold myself back. Do you feel the whole elegant and classy vibe? Letā€™s just call it Princess Areej chilling at her Castle. With the whole shoe lace typing pose it kind of remind me on Cinderella, but if I was to be any Disney princess it would be sleeping beauty for sure!
