๐ญ METROS OF THE WORLD: TOKYO
Connecting the world's largest city, consisting of 23 wards and a population of 37 million, the Tokyo Subway is nothing short of impressive and massive.
It covers 304 km with 285 stops and 13 lines. Every day, it moves 8 million people. ๐ฎ And these metros get very crowded.
The Guardian reported a seat being auctioned off for 2,000 yen (ยฃ14.50)! ๐บ Although we don't recommend doing this as there is a 500,000 yen fine for such action. (source: https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/jun/14/game-of-thrones-commuter-sells-seat-on-crowded-tokyo-train)
"In many ways, Tokyoโs subway is a microcosm of Japanese society itself. Congestion, maximum use of minimum space, state-of-the-art technology, good and bad manners, cleanliness (for the most part), accidents, suicides, perverts, endless announcements and business opportunities โ itโs all there." - Chris Betros, Editor of Japan Today

๐ญ METRO STATIONS OF THE WORLD: PRAGUE
This week we're happy to showcase our home city's metro. Consisting of three lines, Prague's metro was founded in 1974 and currently covers 65.2 km.
Many of its stations in the city-centre feature a uniformed geometric metallic design. ๐จ It has its very own unique typeface, Metron, which was created by typographer Jakub Krฤ in 1973, and can also be found in Cyrillic form in the Praลพskaya metro station in Moscow.
In 2022, the construction for a fourth metro line started which will connect the southern suburbs of the city. โ๏ธ
HOW DO WE GET OUR CITIES FROM ๐๐๐๐ TO ๐๐๐๐? ๐ค
There are no magic tricks. ๐ฉ๐ฐ We need urban mobility alternatives and solutions to private car commuting.
And that is why Mileus is here. โ๏ธ
๐ญ METRO STATIONS OF THE WORLD: TASHKENT
The Uzbek capital flaunts one of the most decedent metro stations in the world. But beyond its good looks, it plays an important role in connecting the city, which is the largest in Central Asia, over 43 stops with trains traveling at an average speed of 46km/h.
Up until 2020, the metro system used a token ticketing system which was replaced by single transport cards.

TRAFFICLESS CITY CENTRES: TRAILBLAZING A NEW NORM THAT NEEDS A NEW SOLUTION ๐ญ
These 1๏ธโฃ0๏ธโฃ cities are kerbing traffic, each in their own unique way, to help make their city centres more for people โ not for congested traffic and car parking.
But, such regulations and restrictions are just half of the solution. Cities and mobility providers also need to think outside of the box to provide new, alternative modes of mobility if people can't drive their own cars into their city centres.
We are at a very exciting turning point for urban mobility... Read why we think so in one of our most popular articles.

๐ญ METRO STATIONS OF THE WORLD: THE HAGUE
Today is World Bike Day today, so this week we decided to share one of, if not the most, bike-friendly stations in the world. Although there are no metros at this train station, we think it is worth sharing!
Welcome to Central Station's bike garage in The Hague. Here, you can find it's an enjoyable and easy experience to park your bike on your intermodal train-bike journey.
Having opened in July 2020, this state-of-the-art space can park 8,000 bikes. Bike parking is free for the first 24 hours, and after that payments can be made through an easy QR system.
If your city's train and metro stations had better bike parking, would you consider train-bike intermodal journeys more?

All these ride-hail operators are starting to work with public transport in a variety of ways.
Why? The future of mobility isn't just public transit or ride-hail. It's a symbiotic union of the twoโand more and more operators are starting to know it.
๐๐ค๐
Read about how just exactly these operators are collaborating with public transit in our latest post!

๐ญ METRO STATIONS OF THE WORLD: LONDON
In 1863, London opened the world's very first underground station which connected Paddington and Farringdon. Both these stations still exist today. But, as you can expect, the network has expanded a bit.
Today, London has 272 metro stations that connect a 402 kilometres wiggly web across the city. ๐๐๏ธ
Just a few days ago, on May 17th, the Elizabeth Line was added to this network and has been hailed as a line fit for a queen. ๐ Once fully complete, it will add around 10% more capacity to the city's rail network.

Post-pandemic demand is back up.
There aren't enough drivers.
Gas prices are going up like crazy.

THE CHEAPER WAY TO POWER YOUR CAR? โฝ๐
Things are changing, and now according to research by Compare the Market, it is 30% cheaper to operate an electric vehicle than a traditional petrol car.

๐ญ METRO STATIONS OF THE WORLD: NAPLES
At Mileus, we're kind of big fans of rapid transit โ especially when it looks like this.
"Naples has one of the largest free and public access museums around the world: the stations of line 1 of the underground. The result is the so-called art Metro line (together with some stops on line 6) in which stations, designed by great architects, and installations by world artists coexist daily. Most of these works are accessible every day as we move through the city. The art metro stations are currently 15 and collect about two hundred works of art."

THE COST OF CONGESTION IN 4๏ธโฃ EUROPEAN CITIES ๐๏ธ๐
Being stuck in traffic is no fun for anyone. Not only that - it's also a massive contributor to CO2 emissions.
This year, TomTom's annual congestion index also looks CO2 emissions. Some cities are better than others... but they all have a lot of room for improvement!

BUT WERE THE DUTCH ALWAYS SO BIKE-CENTRIC? ๐ฒ๐ค
No!
It was only the 1970s Dutch that policymakers sought a radical solution to make cities safer and more liveable. Before then, private cars were the mainstream mode of transport.
And so, they introduced policies to reduce private car use and make biking an easier and safer mode of transport.
Moral of the story: change is possible! โจ
LET'S BREAK THE CYCLE ๐๐๐
Cities should be for people โ not for parking and excessive car lanes.
In London, parking takes up an equivalent of 1๏ธโฃ0๏ธโฃ Hyde Parks! Surely we can reduce this.
We're dreaming of a future that embraces more shared and interconnected mobility. And we know we're not the only ones!
MOVING PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO NEW HEIGHTS โ๏ธ๐ก๐
Medellin and La Paz; these are two cities that run public transport gondola's across their urban landscapes to help move their many residents.
Promising to speed up trips from the capital's centre, 'Cable A' in Paris hopes to do the same. It will connect the terminus of Metro line 8 to southeastern suburbs along its 4.5 km aerial track.

EARTH DAY TOMORROW HAS US THINKING... ๐๐ง ๐ก
We know all too well that cars are the one of the biggest contributors to CO2 emissions and it is essential we electrify.
But CO2 emissions are not the only problem, and electric vehicles are not the only solution.
To improve our sustainable urban mobility networks, we need to massively rethink how we use cars in cities, and we think fleet operators can play a new role in this solution...

NEARLY 50 YEARS OF CONGESTION PRICING ๐๐จ
We often think of London as the congestion pricing pioneer.
But, in fact, Singapore introduced such a system nearly 50 years ago in 1975.
Since then, it has continued to adapt and evolve, becoming one of the most complex, comprehensive, and technologically sophisticated systems in the world.

Whim conducted a survey in Finland โ the biggest reason to own a personal car was the flexibility it brought. While pollution, expensive cost, or viable public transportation where the reason why people said they don't own a car.

COMMUTING HOME.
COMFORTABLY.
Cities face the challenge of how to enhance mobility, ensure accessibility, and create high quality and efficient transport systems while reducing congestion, pollution and accidents.
We believe that the future of urban transportation lies in an efficient enforcement of intermodality and interoperability principles, motivating capacity sharing between the transportation players, be it public or private transportation operators.
โWe address the prime cause of people using low-capacity vehicles (private or shared cars), which is the lack of comfort related to public transportation.
Mileus is a digital platform enabling real-time resource planning and automated interoperability between public transportation and taxi / ride-hailing transportation services. Our initial focus is to make residentsโ commute back home more comfortable and guaranteed so that they leave their cars at home in the morning.
