1 year ago today, on December 22, 2020, Michael Thompson's commutation was signed after he served 26 years of a 60-year sentence for a nonviolent cannabis-related offense.

Though he would go on to spend another 37 days in prison before his official release, this day marks an important milestone in his journey and ours as we continue to fight for people like Michael who have been unjustly harmed by the war on drugs.

We applaud Attorney General Rob Bonta for recognizing the urgency of this issue and working with us to fill implementation gaps of the 2018 law which guarantees relief for all qualifying individuals.

Thank you to LPP’s State Policy Team who has been working tirelessly with the AG’s office to implement the spirit of his original expungement bill.

After all, no one is truly free when the collateral consequences of a cannabis conviction can still impact their lives so greatly.

We’re happy to announce that LPP constituent Gilbert Manning was released this week to home confinement! Gilbert served nearly 9 years of a 17.5-year sentence for conspiracy to distribute and possess cannabis.

Gilbert is looking forward to spending this time reconnecting with family, including his parents, wife, and kids. As a previous owner/operator of a commercial trucking company, Gilbert plans to eventually go back into trucking after he renews his CDL.

To his supporters he says, "To all that played a role in advocating for my release, thank you and God Bless."

I really can't say enough good things about cannabis. Anything I say just scratches the surface.

While we are relieved that Jerry is now home, the fact remains that he — and his family — lost 10 years while others freely profited from the same actions.
