Since Friday was St. Patrick’s Day, students in the Project Inspire after school program used engineering in STEM this week. First, second, third, and fourth grade students used cards of designs and tried to replicate those designs using Lego bricks.

First, second, third, and fourth grade Project Inspire students learned how to code with VEX123 robots. It’s fun to see the robot not do what they “told” them to do. Then we go over their coding pattern and they learn how to debug or figure out what they did wrong. So much fun learning a new skill!!

Mrs. Jessica Lawson and Mrs. Sheronda’s third grade students read the book Poppy. As their culminating activity, they explored owl pellets. As you can see, some students enjoyed it more than others. 😂

Fourth graders worked with open and closed electric circuits with Christmas lights and a small motor with a fan. We used AA batteries to show a closed circuit and make the light work and then used a small motor with a fan to demonstrate a closed circuit. We even compared using a AA battery and a 9 volt battery with the motor to feel the difference in potential energy provided by each.

Fourth grade had a great time at PHS today. We visited the indoor facility and the Hook. We were able to see the STEM students’ roller coasters, use LEGO bricks to code, watch how Tinkercad works, and learn how to fly a drone. Thank you Ben DiChiara, Anna Shelton, and Peabody STEM students for doing a great job today!!

We had so much fun at STEMtacular last night at Peabody! Balloons over Broadway was a hit! The kids had such fun decorating their balloons! I have to give a shout out to Lois Ellison, April Merando, Cindy Haney, and Natalie Timbes for your help. Thanks to Ani Staser for the idea and Laura Carter for helping Lois and me with the banner. Thanks to the PHS STEM ladies for inflating lots of balloons and creating the banner letters!

Fourth grade is studying about weathering, erosion, and deposition in science class. To get a better understanding about weathering, students used sugar cubes to simulate the process of weathering over several years. The students made predictions and then wrote about how the sugar cubes looked after weathering. Some students were much more aggressive at weathering than others. 😁
