Happy Birthday to Captain Kirk!
There is a funny irony with Discovery season 1. The only reason why the Discovery became so effective as a war ship is arguably due to Lorca, who is the antithesis of all Starfleets values.
Without him they definitely wouldn't of survived the war. Between his strategic mind and how he trained/developed the crew the Discovery wouldn't of been as effective as it was.
Its just a funny observation made for a series so preachy.
