I just wanted to share this super amazing and super comprehensive carousel made by ! I think being mindful of prison labor is super important especially since I don’t think it gets talked about that much. I’m not sure if you guys have seen the Netflix documentary 13th but the prison system is basically a loophole in this amendment especially when coupled with the fact that a majority of inmates are POC who are being incarcerated for minor tribulations which ultimately serves to perpetuate the systemic racism in our country. We can use the power as consumers to make more conscious choices about the products we buy and I know it can be super hard to find out about these things especially because a lot of these companies are not super transparent about their policies but I hope this helps!!🥰

Hey guys! I have been gone awhile! I just felt like I didn’t really want to clutter your feeds with anything other than the black lives matter movement. I think I am more comfortable now posting a mixed feed since this company is rooted in activism and making change! Anyway I will have a blog post up talking about the best black owned sustainable businesses. Ooh I wanted to give a shoutout to as well bc they are one of my favorites!!❤️❤️

I just wanted to come on here an voice my support for the people who are fighting inequality and racism in our society. In my social studies class we learned about how these riots parallel events in the 1960s which were fueled by police brutality as well. In Newark NJ (1967) two white police officers severely beat a black cab driver for a minor traffic violation. When the news spread, riots erupted. Shops were looted, buildings were set on fire, and violence continued for 6 days leaving 26 people dead. Another instance was in Detroit and 17,000 local and national law enforcement officials were sent to handle the protests. After 5 bloody days 43 were killed, 1000 injured (who were mostly African Americans due to the hands of law enforcement), and 7000 arrested. If you take only one thing away from this it’s the Kerner Commission, who was a committee tasked to find out why so much violence was occurring. They concluded that it stemmed from deep rooted societal problems like police brutality, unemployment, and a direct result of white racism. This was significant because it separated blame from African Americans and contradicted the perpetuation of stereotypes that people used to gloss over the true reality of the prejudice in society. I think it’s important to recognize the why surrounding this issue in order to make steps to making our society a better place. My support goes out to the family and friends of George Floyd and the people who continue to voice their frustrations.❤️

Tips to properly dispose of your contact lenses!
I keep a little painted mason jar in my bathroom where I can save the plastic and foil parts of my daily contacts. Since the plastic part is a No5 plastic which is one of the harder plastics to recycle and only about 3% of PP or Number 5 plastics are being recycled in the US. Fortunately, there are companies that will recycle these materials! Whole Foods has a program called preserve gimme 5 that takes things like batteries, cork, and other harder to dispose products. However I’m pretty sure they do not accept the foil and the contact lenses themselves but they are a good option if nothing else I nearby. I usually go with Terracycle because they take every part including the used contact itself, the foil, and the plastic container! I’m super happy that they offer this program because it is estimated that there are around 45 million contact wearers in the US alone. This simple thing can greatly reduce our collective waste!🥰🌈🌎

Sustainability in clothing is an area that I am hoping to expand to in the future! I think it’s so awesome to hear about what’s new on the frontier of ethical and earth friendly clothing. Fashion revolution hosted some really awesome zoom calls about sustainable fashion. I’ve been watching the ones that I was unable to attend and they are pretty great! Join the movement and ask yourself: who made my clothes?

I knew about blue light exposure on skin and that it can be damaging but I guess I never realized how much damage it actually does. What’s crazy is that blue light or (HEV rays) can prematurely age our skin but also penetrates deeper than UVA and UVB light. To fix the blue light issue you can change the color settings on your phone and laptop to be more yellow or red, light more candles, or turn off your devices before bed! I am planning on posting a more comprehensive blogpost and really dig into blue light and it’s effects so stay tuned!

Hey guys! I am Trisha a student in Washington state! I started Gaia Sustainable because I was super frustrated with the way businesses were continuing to have very unsustainable practices, most notably the fashion and beauty industries because they are constantly coming out with new products and new reasons to buy them and they don’t consider how much waste they are generating (and sometimes even create the image that you are not good enough just to get you to buy their products). I want to push forward a new business model at Gaia we want to give you products we know work and can be staples in your skincare routine. That’s why we want to foster this conversation with you because we know you care too❤️🌸🌿
