Womens Work NZ

A collective of women and non-binary photographers in NZ working together to celebrate the female gaze.

here rounding up with some work I've done for .
This is one of those jobs I feel like has happened as a direct result of being part of Women's Work. Through this community I've been able to get in front of some opportunities that might not have otherwise happened, although I am a firm believer in "What is meant for you, will reach you...
I feel immensely priveledged to have been asked to shoot not one, but two campaigns for Heineken. The first campaign “Cheers to all tastes” celebrates personal preference and human difference by introducing non-Heineken drinks into Heineken ads, was such a buzz shooting. It was all about mixing up the sterotypes of who drinks what, so being a woman photographer shooting a beer campaign felt like a fitting choice.
The second campaign “first sip” seemed like a natural progression of the first and lent some of the same gender cues but was really all about the pleasure of that very first ice cold sip of beer. Part of the brief was to anchor the logo with the pour line of the beer, an interesting and fun challenge - it's all in the detail!
Thanks to the one and only for producing these jobs and for her tireless dedication and generosity towards or Women’s Work community. Thanks for having me ❤️.

Morena - Godmorgen! here today showing of some campaign work I’m incredibly proud of. One of the greatest things about being a photographer is how one thing tends to lead to another and that is exactly how I got the opportunity to shoot a really cool campaign for with & .at.alma
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"This is Gold" campaign for Amex was shot in the empty space of what is now restaurant in and was an absolute dream job for me. Women's Works very own helped me with the production to ensure everything went smoothly while we were shooting remotely to the agency in Sydney.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was at first very nerve wrecking to be shooting for an international client of this caliber but thanks to my most trusted crew members incl .hugues and Nic Fletcher I could confidently pull it off and proudly enjoy the wrap around billboard at downtown Victoria Park and other key points around town. This campaign helped kick Aucklands hospitality scene back into gear after many lockdowns and restrictions on the restaurant industry and you can see how my love for shooting restaurants led to this job.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Keep an eye out for some bts footage and billboard snaps from this campaign.

Morena. here showcasing some of my hospitality work. I so enjoy shooting restaurants because it digs right into the core of my love for storytelling, and offers an opportunity to shoot an umbrella of genres from food, beverage & product to spaces to portrait & lifestyle. Over the years I've had the pleasure of working with some of New Zealand's most celebrated chefs, eateries & wineries incl at & .nz in , when he had , at , , , .buenaventura , and many more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What’s fascinating to me is how a chefs passion for his or her craft is equal to how passionate I feel about photography. The two industries have so many things in common that it’s never a dull moment shooting beautiful food while connecting with a fellow creative mind.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If I'm lucky there'll be a little taste test of a new dish too!

take over. Some of my most well-known work is probably The Bug Project I did with .
Through my mentorship journey with photographer consultant .force, it became evident how important personal projects are to a successful career as a photographer and the development as an artist. Looking back to the multi-awarded Bug Project that was created just as I was emerging back into my career as a sought-after food photographer, I needed to focus on a personal project that could be a catalyst for a re-launch.
Originally this series came to life around the idea of the “unexpected” and I reached out to food stylist Fiona Hugues to collaborate with and help develop the idea and ex*****on.
As it turns out, Fiona and I were the perfect balance of creative juices that this project needed to reach the sky. Our collaboration has resulted in a whopping 6 awards for the Bug Project so far and I am delighted to be sharing it here.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A project born from the desire to provoke a conversation about sustainable food sources in the impending future. Inspired by the trend of edible insects on the plate at high-end restaurants and classic Dutch still life paintings, where the stunning beauty of abundant food and botanical settings always reveal a hint of repugnance and decay in the form of insects.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With thoughts back to medieval times and colour hints of highly prized native NZ greenstone, Pounamu. A series of food images were created showing a range of ways that insects could be part of an everyday meal. At first glance, the image looks like a beautiful and delicious recipe that you wouldn't hesitate to cook at home. A closer look reveals that insects are either part of the recipe or have come to eat your meal before you.

Kia Ora! Hej! here, it’s my turn to do a takeover here on . I’m a food and lifestyle photographer and the usual woman behind the wheel here on insta. I share everyone's work, help plan takeovers and post our exhibition campaigns. But today it's my turn to show you a bit of what I do as a food and lifestyle photographer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A little trip down memory lane: Over a decade ago I left the comfort of my home country Denmark and jumped into the deep to follow a dream of an international career Down Under. Everyone I knew wanted to go to New York, but I wanted to go in the opposite direction to pursue shooting food for .hay. Most of my friends said I’d never come home. But I was convinced I’d be a year or two, and then come back! But here I am, 14 years on - not in Oz but in beautiful New Zealand with a husband and two wonderful boys!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I always knew I wanted to be a photographer. It’s a path I’ve followed ever since I was a teenager with various courses in photography, internships, full-time assisting, an apprenticeship in commercial photography and a dream job where I was shooting food, packaging & campaigns at a commercial photo studio in Copenhagen.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Come on a trip with me through a journey of food & lifestyle photography and finding your purpose.

This is my last takeover and I'm sharing images from the current series I am working on: Anima and The Dance of Life. Both are ongoing projects and remain deeply personal to me, conveying our ever-present connection to the primordial as we enter the age of transhumanism. My focus now is to explore the human psyche through movement, to portray the human experience from a different perspective.
I am beyond grateful for Womens work to have me, it has been such a pleasure!! I hope you enjoyed the journey…

taking over again with a selection of portraits this time.
When I portray people I strive to capture their true essence, and through the process guide them towards revealing an unfiltered and authentic version of themselves. At times, what I create is the visual interpretation of what they evoke in me.

In the world of fiction, I am taking you on film sets this time, for my latest takeover with . For more than a decade now, I have been working as a unit stills photographer. Although it all started unexpectedly, my passion for cinema regularly lands me on set.

Takeover with again. The journey continued on the road, this time with some documentary work. I have always been fascinated by faith, religion, rituals and their place in society. These images were selected from several stories as part of a body of work called Faith.

Tēnā tātou. Ko Melissa Banks ahau - continuing the takeover.
He iwi pakohe. Ngāti Kuia is a local rūnanga that I have had the privilege of working with over many years. They run a range of amazing kaupapa that have a real impact on the lives of their people. One of my favourites is their beekeeper program. Every couple of weeks for a year, I would drive to the beautiful Titiraukawa, beside the Pelorus Bridge, and document the complete process from hive building and population, to harvesting, processing and bottling. I get up close and personal with bees and have learnt so much about what amazing creatures they are. He iwi karakia.

Hine tū, hine ora. Photographing the Nelson Arts Festival was so creatively inspiring for me, juxtaposed against sheer exhaustion from trying to capture as many of the events as I could, jammed into every day. Ko Te Ākau was a stunning live performance, performed daily in a transformed art gallery. It was completely interactive, with the audience walking amongst the creative performers. A creation of Charles Koroneho, who weaves together the fields of performance, culture and visual arts. Hine noho, hine mate.

Together by .
I began this project with my daughter during the first lookdown as a way to keep her entertained and myself thinking creatively.
While I had an idea of what I wanted to do from the start, I also had to be flexible and go with the unexpected places my daughter could steer the project.
My daughter is “reshaping” my work in this instance. I love her innocent and unprejudiced view of things and my work.
The unpredictability of the project is what became one of the most exciting things for me. To see what creative imagery our collaborative duo would come up with next.

Portraits by of , .baldwin, &
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These individuals are all venerable and empowered women photographers. The idea behind these subjects' portraits led to an incredible bond between me and the sitter. Everyone is remarkable and one of a kind.
All of these photographers were driven by the fact that there is only one roll of film, which means there is only one chance to get the right shot with no instant preview of the final outcome. I wanted to draw the viewer's attention back to the raw, traditional, and rare style of photography. This is the distinct spirit of the infamous 4x5 large format film camera. I have chosen people in my field because I realized how busy and inaccessible, they are due to the demands of their fast-paced lifestyles. Many of these photographers I respect are usually behind the camera however this was an opportunity to bring them in front. A chance to be the subject themselves.

From the series "Threat" by .nz . I wanted to explore the strain on relationships during the Pandemic. The litany of polarising information divided many, our lenses blurred and we stopped seeing the humanity behind the belief. I used freelensing to emphasise the narrow places we focus on when under this stress and grain to highlight deterioration of relationships as well as our view of ourselves. The low light heightens the darkness we find ourselves in when we isolate ourselves out of connection.

From the series ‘Unseen Glass’ by . The windows that Colin McCahon created for twelve buildings that I have documented over the past several years, had been barely mentioned in the great mass of commentary and scholarship about his art.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is this because windows do not have the commercial value of a painting, not being easily traded in the marketplace and displayed in art galleries or is it because they are installed in more domestic places; private houses and churches and are not viewed as serious art, maybe as mere craft?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yet we know from McCahon’s letters how very important this work was to him, providing a meaningful context and structure within which to express his ideas on faith and our place.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Researching and taking photographs of his windows and of the windows that inspired him, has led me to begin to explore and celebrate the overlooked and undervalued art and architecture in domestic and local settings.

From the series "Svalbard, Norwegian Arctic" by
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This image shows the giant but fragile ice walls of Negribreen, one of the largest tidewater glaciers of Svalbard. Its delicate towers, shaped by topography, pressure and time, can reach over 80 metres tall. Svalbard is known to be the fastest-warming place on earth. The numerous cracks in the glacier are the scars of climate change, and serve as a warning, reminding us that these beautiful structures are now temporary.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I was fortunate to photograph a very rare sighting, of a male and female polar bear, during courtship. A confronting moment, when realising that even this far north, they can’t escape marine debris and human pollution.

Lumen prints by .macfie.art. Lumen printing involves using silver gelatin photographic paper and sunlight to make images and these ones are a form of cameraless photography. They were made at home during a family isolation period, due to Covid, in 2022. They were made using materials found at home at the time in the artist’s home, including discarded throat lozenge wrappers and hand sanitiser bottles which were combined with expired photographic paper and the weather (sunlight, wind, frost, and rain) to record these images. All these elements are interacting with the paper to record what you see here. These four are part of a larger series and they are numbered according to the day of isolation. The creation of these was a calming practice at a tricky time.

From the series, How We Roll by
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Imagine, a world where no body is the wrong body.
And that is all we see.
Realistic reality.
Beautiful bodies.
Free to be me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Everyone deserves to see themselves reflected in the world around them. There’s a handful of brands who commit to diversity and inclusion but it’s still not the norm. We cast, we pose, we retouch, we change the way someone looks based on a set of outdated and unrealistic ideals and beauty standards. How We Roll is a celebration of realness - normal, everyday bodies, perfect as they are - a project intent on lifting everybody up and moving past stereotypes.
