We recently had the privilege of speaking with Kelvin Yu, one of the current owners of Route 196 a few months back, and it was one of most enjoyable conversations we’ve had.

Now that the famed music venue is closing its doors, this (unxpectedly...) becomes our small, little tribute to the other owners, the staff, and the regulars of Route 196.

Thank you. And hope to see you open your doors again in the future.

We at Behind The Song/Stage PH are super stoked to be back, and our latest episode is especially exciting because it features one of our favorite songs of all time, and one of our favorite songwriter/musicians of all time as well!

Chris P. Suzara, the main songwriter behind [his former band] Freestyle's biggest singles and hit songs of his own, was very generous to share the stories behind the smash hit "Before I Let You Go," and went as far back as his formative years as a musician - and ultimately - into the real story behind his departure from Freestyle and how he got back in the music game after those events. It's a very interesting story and we're glad he shared it with us!

New episode is up and we have spanned three countries just to put-it together!

Often times, success comes pretty unexpectedly - for sure you put-in the hard work, the practice and the all-out love for the craft, but many hitmakers seem to have one thing in common, when asked to tell their story: their biggest pieces of work seem to be the ones that come most-naturally.

Such is the case for siblings Mia Jeazell Nielsen and Jasper Grutas, the main driving force behind Zelle Band, the band whose smash mainstream hit "Sabihin," is forever immortalized in the great OPM songbook.

When asked to look-back on the genesis behind the song, and the events it sparked after it became a HUGE success (both on mainstream radio and within the hearts of the music-loving masses), both Jeazell and Jasper reveal the interesting back-stories and anecdotes. gets the deets and chats a bit with both musicians, who are still actively pursuing their love for music in foreign shores as we speak. The episode is hosted by Joey D.

For the latest episode of , podcast host Joey D. reunites and shoots the breeze with his former Intolerant bandmates, bassist Mic Gallegos and drummer (and incidentally, album sound engineer) Pepo Gohu to talk about the track “Blunt Force Trauma,” the call-to-arms single off the band’s debut disc Reasons For Unrest.

It’s a fun, mini-reunion-of-sorts for fans of local metal as the members talk about the concept and in-studio beginnings and ultimately the arrangement of their single, and how some of the parts of the song were almost voted-out.

Like most stories, Annie S. Alejo got her start in "the business" by simply being a fan of great music: she started by writing press releases, pushing her favorite local and international artists and ultimately, being part of major local projects like Michael Jackson's Concert in Manila, and not too long after, became the managing Editor for one of the country's most well-known music publications PULP Magazine, a publication that started around the year 2000 and made waves with crazy photo shoots, uncompromising music reviews and awesome live events.

But the journey didn't end there: Alejo would soon be in charge of publications she would start with various other partners, then work for a major broadsheet, work for the Araneta Group of companies and now, with a chain of hotels, and writes every now and then on the side. The one constant: music. host Joey D. (who has worked with Alejo throughout the years...) enjoys listening to the various "war stories" and asks and learns-about more interesting anecdotes from Alejo's decades-spanning mission to champion local music.

In 2005, The Itchyworms released one of their most musically ambitious albums, – an impressive full-length body of work whose concept revolved around both the amusement-with and (most of the time…) dismay the culture phenomena brought about. Acclaimed by both critics and fans, it would be their very own Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness – and arguably catapult the band to the status of being a household name.

And the track “Beer” was one of the main songs that would appeal to so many music fans, and win-over even those who were previously tuned-out to the local band scene. Songwriter and drummer Jazz Nicolas tells us the story behind the hit song, how his father offered precious songwriting advice, and takes us through the creative process of the entire album – from how the concept came about, to the band’s decision to write songs in Tagalog and how kundiman and other proudly local sounds and styles contributed to the crafting of what could be the band’s finest album.

Oh… and Jazz doesn’t drink beer. Go figure.

To the average listener, very few songs in the thrash metal/hardcore genre can ever be considered - nor even put in the same sentence with the words - “timeless” or “classic.” But Skychurch - since its inception - has always been a band that defied the odds and traditions set by mainstream music, and has managed to gain the respect even from non-metal peers and listeners.

For the latest episode of , podcast host Joey D. (who happens to have a previous 12-year recording, management and touring history with the band) interviews former bandmate, bassist/chief songwriter Russell Dela Cruz and talks about the single EUTHANASIA, the epic six-minute-plus track that was uniquely an old song that ushered-in a new era of the band, that found itself with new personnel and a new ethic in coming up with ground n’ pound anthems.

Established by swift inspiration - partly due out of necessity - Nemesis Music Group has proven to be one of the most dynamic and busiest forces in the Philippines' management/production game: handling everything from club-sized to large-scale events, and being in charge of the general well-being of notable local groups like Urbandub, Autotelic, Faspitch and Sirens.

So you can bet that the future of local music is in good, able hands, which is why took the time out to chat with the tag-team powerhouse that is Carleen Panganiban and LordTrak Ocampo, both no strangers in the game by now, and who have been under the steady guidance of frontman Gabby Alipe. How and when did they start? Has it been a great ride so far? What does it take to do what they do? Host Joey D. asks the questions, and both Carleen and Lord gamely answer the Qs.

More than just the average rock band from the 90s, Truefaith was one of those groups that totally came-in from left-field and brought a sophisticated, smooth-jazz kind of vibe during a time when rock n' roll bands were trying to outdo each other in terms of loudness and heaviness. As timeless as the song is, so are the stories behind it: from recording the tune at the studio where it was recorded with NO permission, to how the song defied the odds on the charts against international pop giant Mariah Carey and the whole "MTV Unplugged" phenomena that was ruling the era.

host Joey D. talks to songwriter/de facto band leader Medwin O. Marfil, and gets the deets and amusing stories behind the legendary track. You can listen to the podcast here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2oY82JAjaXE4zbrDP671su?si=H45YxHGHRh2dQttBgSOuGA

Special treat today, because features a band with one of the most memorable singles of the millennium , whose smash hit DAISY earned them an award for NU107's Rock Video of the Year in 2003 (alongside other nominations as Best New Artist and Album of the Year...), and nominations in the MTV Music Awards also in that same year.

Podcast host Joey D. interviews the two founding members: Allan Chacon Elgar and Macky Macaventa (who both now play for the legendary Truefaith...), and they revisit the stories and the details behind 's time in the spotlight, and how the band - unknowingly at the time - became one of the very first groups to practice the DIY ethos in the mainstream music game. It's another new episode of - An under-quarantine podcast hosted by Joey D., and for the second installment of the all-new podcast, Joey talks to musician/songwriter and longtime buddy Marc Abaya of Kjwan, as they go for a stroll down memory lane one late evening, and talk about the breakthrough single (and up until now, crowd-favorite...) "Daliri," which was released a whopping 16 years ago in 2004.

Abaya, who himself grew up on a steady diet of music inspired by s*x, drugs and rock n' roll, recounts the events in no-BS fashion: his departure at the time from one of the country's biggest bands Sandwich, and the decisions and (mis)adventures that led up to him forming a band with longtime friends and navigating through a then-evolving musical landscape, standoffs with nuns trying to run decent schools and well, all that other s**t. But more importantly, he tells us how the song he and his band are most-known-for came to be.

COMING SOON! The very first episode of , an under-quarantine podcast hosted by Joey Dizon and produced by Big Baby Studios.

It truly is a bitch when people ask you "What's Your Favorite Song?" mainly because, there's just way too many... and oftentimes, we talk about the lyrics, the melody, the catchy choruses but very seldom do we know the stories behind these tunes: the inspiration, the near-blunders and the lucky breaks way before the "record" button was ever hit.

So music fan Joey D. decided to call-up random musician-friends during this lockdown in the PH and fired-off the questions most people either forget to ask, or pass-along to their friends.

For the premiere installment of Behind The Song, Joey interview's longtime buddy Chris Padilla of HILERA, and they talk not just about the band's earliest hit RHYME WITHOUT REASON, but generally about the band's beginnings and what they were currently up-to before everyone was put under house arrest. Stay tuned for the official online release date.

THERE’S A STORY BEHIND EVERYTHING.

BEHIND THE SONG. It's a bitch every time someone asks us what are favorite song is, plainly because there's just way to many; we talk about the lyrics, the melody, the album, but rarely get the full story behind it.

BEHIND THE STAGE. Far from being another run-of-the-mill conversation with the "movers n' shakers" of the local Philippine music scene, Behind The Stage is just a straight up conversation with buddies, comrades, drinking partners and longtime friends who are trying to get the proverbial ball rolling and make s**t happen. The difference? No time for bulls**t and self-pats-on-the-back. Why do these people do it? Because they love it. And could care less whether or not it's an oft-thankless task.

Musician/radio host Joey D - who considers himself a fan, first and foremost - is bored out of his mind during the current lockdown, so he decided to surprise-call his favorite songwriter/musicians and ask them for more details about their timeless tunes, and career/life choices in the local music industry.
