Challenging Behaviours and Sensory Processing! 🤯

Sensory processing challenges can lead to difficulties in how a person perceives and responds to their environment.

Individuals who are hypersensitive may find certain stimuli overwhelming, causing distress and triggering behaviours such as aggression or withdrawal. In contrast, those who are hyposensitive may seek out intense sensory experiences, leading to behaviours that seem disruptive.

Understanding an individual's sensory profile helps in identifying these triggers and tailoring interventions to reduce challenging behaviours, promoting a more supportive and adaptive environment for those with sensory processing differences.

Embracing Individuality and Inclusivity: A Call To Action 27/06/2024

THREE MINUTE THURSDAY - BLOG POST! 📖

Embracing Individuality & Inclusivity: A Call To Action ✨

More then ever, people have let us know they 'worry' about people that 'don't fit in the box' as a result of their individuality - whether that be in their workplace, in a social group, or in their school.

While this sounds negative, it usually comes from a positive place - a place of fear that our child, loved one, student, or friend may struggle with their individuality in a society that may not always welcome and embrace them, and fear they may not be accepted.

More then ever, we need to embrace individuality, promote inclusivity, and create supportive environments that celebrate diversity and enhance mental health.

Embracing Individuality and Inclusivity: A Call To Action In our rapidly evolving society, it is more important than ever to embrace the individuality and uniqueness

Embracing Double Empathy: Understanding ASD in Children ✨

Double empathy refers to the idea that understanding between neurotypical (non-autistic) and autistic individuals works both ways. When both groups struggle to understand each other's perspectives, it can affect communication and relationships for those with ASD.

WE HEAR YOU! 🥰

Teaching your children (even those without a disability or additional learning support need) about autism, differences between them and others, and individuality, is the BEST give you can give your neurotypical child - the gift of accepting and including others from all walks of life.

We are on a mission to implement supports to help young people develop their skills in building and maintaining positive peer relationships.

BUT...

We're also on a mission to support families, carers, schools, and other providers implement more holistic supports for ALL children supporting them to understand:

🌻We are ALL unique
🌻We ALL have different needs
🌻THIS IS OK!
🌻We ALL have so much to give
🌻We are stronger, TOGETHER!

BEHAVIOURAL ICEBERG! ❄️

There is often a large focus on the behaviour we see, why its unacceptable or inappropriate, and we are driven to employ a consequence we feel is proportionate to the severity of the behaviour.

By doing this, we fulfil our own needs of 'justice,' teaching a child the lesson we think they need to learn, or a consequence which was successful in eliminating the behaviour for our own children or other children we support.

By doing this, are we addressing the underlying cause of the behaviour? Are we implementing a strategy to reduce the likelihood the behaviour will re-occur, or will need to re-occur again? 🤔

Challenging behaviour can be fatiguing for parents, teachers, and carers and behaviour change is complex - that's what we're here for! ✨

SENSORY PROCESSING! 💡

We all have senses, in which our brain takes in new information, interprets and organises information, resulting in a meaningful response - this is Sensory Processing.

We each tolerate varying levels of sensory experiences through our senses, some experiences we may avoid and some we may seek out. Imbalances between our level of exposure and tolerance to sensory experiences, our ability to process sensory experiences, and our regulation skills, can sometimes result in a child communicating this difficulty through challenging behaviour.

Understanding a child's sensory profile, their sensory patterns and the way they respond and make sense of sensory experiences is an essential component of addressing high-risk and challenging sensory-related behaviours.

It's important to remember that all behaviour serves a purpose, and it may not be sensory-related. Comprehensive processes which support us understand the underlying cause of behaviour, is essential in implementing meaningful strategies and achieving success! 🫶

THEORY OF MIND - ToM✨

Theory of mind develops as children gain greater experience with social interactions. In times when children living with ASD have difficulty with social interactions, they may have altered ToM skills, which significantly impacts the quality of their social interactions with others, and the development of social competence.

Have you ever wondered why a child with Autism doesn't seem to be able to understand how their behaviours impact others? Or communicate how others might be feeling?

FUNCTIONAL COMMUNICATION! 🗣

Functional Communication is a skillset that enables us to communicate our thoughts, feelings, and needs more effectively with those around us.

When we think of functional communication - we think about communication skills we NEED to be communicate our most basic care and support needs.

➡️ Communicating specific needs - relationships and connection.
➡️ Communicating basic needs - hunger and pain.

Many challenging behaviours are further complexed by the inability to regulate our emotions and communicate our thoughts, feelings, and needs with those around us.

If your child was able to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and their needs with you, would it make a difference to the behaviours you see? ✨

Having a wheelchair accessible classroom for students who use wheelchair's, doesn't prevent access for students who don't use a wheelchair.

Autistic Burnout - What Is It? 25/08/2022

NEW BLOG POST!

We have received a flood of questions about Autistic Burnout over the past few days!

Our latest blog post will hopefully provide further insight into the condition, its relevance to behaviour support, and what you can do to support those you love who may be experiencing Autistic Burnout!

Autistic Burnout - What Is It? People living with Autism have long been talking about the concept of 'Autistic Burnout' although, the condition has not been studied and researched for as long as you may think... What Is Autistic Burnout? 'Autistic Burnout' is a condition which results from chronic stress placed on people living w...

24/08/2022

'Autistic Burnout' is a condition which results from chronic stress placed on people living with autism.

Autistic Burnout is caused by ongoing exposure to expectations which exceed a person's ability to cope with the resources and supports they have. The condition is characterised by prolonged and persistent symptoms associated with exhaustion, reduced tolerance to daily life, and an inability to function and participate in daily life activities (which a person would otherwise be able to cope with).

Our role in supporting people with a disability is to support a person in their environment - reduce environmental factors which cause stress while skills in emotional regulation and adaptive coping skills occurs.

It's essential that all people involved in providing care and support to people living with autism receive ongoing training and guidance in support strategies that reduce the risk of Autistic Burnout and support people with a disability achieve their personal best!

SELF-CARE! 🫶

We hear it all the time, but lets be honest - we rarely do it!

With a few of our team members, parents, carers, and families unwell at the moment, this is your friendly reminder to take care of YOU!

Caring for people with extra needs brings many of us absolute joy, but it takes a toll on our emotions - it can be hard work and can often feel like its a huge effort with little reward.

✨ Watch a movie (or commit to a series!)
✨ Develop a healthy routine - healthy good and regular exercise - commit to the routine by writing it down and sticking it to your fridge!
✨ Set a small goal for yourself each day (reading a book for 10 minutes each day or walking 5,000 steps!)
✨ Set alarms to remind yourself to take time for YOU (no 'snoozing' the alarms!)

We need to be emotionally READY and AVAILABLE to care for those around us who need a little more love, attention, and support.

PERSPECTIVE! 👌

The mindset we adopt and the lens we look through when responding to behaviour is vital.

As adults - busy, tired, and frustrated, we can view challenging behaviour as a challenge and become focused on imposing and following through on consequences.

Instead of identifying and imposing immediate negative consequences for behaviour, how would things change if we focused energy on building a positive partnerships with those we love, and teaching skills? ✨
