Spargelsamstag (asparagus Saturday) is on Saturday, May 4th in Schwetzingen. It is an open air festival.

Fun Facts:

🇩🇪 The season is mid April until end of June

🇩🇪 Germans love white Spargel and call it "white gold"

🇩🇪 The city of Schwetzingen claims to be the “Asparagus Capital of the World.”

Schwetzingen has a "Spargellauf" (asparagus run) on Sunday, April 14th to kick of the Spargelzeit. It is at the beautiful palace and gardens. I put the link in the comments.

A German man named Volker Kraft started a tradition in 1965 which turned into quite the project! He started with 18 Easter eggs and it turned into 10,000 eggs 😳

The display in Saalfeld attracted visitors worldwide, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere for years.

Moving back to Germany after 11 years abroad…

In 2020, everything changed for all of us. I was living in London at the time, with big plans at the start of the year to move to Japan and teach English. I had already bought my Japanese grammar books and was nearly finished with my teaching certification. But then came the news that reshaped the world and everyone's lives – my teaching plans in Japan were no longer possible.

Despite this setback, I sensed that change was still looming on the horizon for me. I just couldn't pinpoint what form it would take. Then, during a week-long trip back to Germany in September, while strolling the streets of Frankfurt, I realized what the next step would be – relocating back to Germany.

It was a surprising revelation, considering my extensive time abroad: 8 years in America, 1 year in Australia, 2 years in the UK, and now back to Germany. Excitedly, I packed up my life in London within 3 weeks and arrived in Frankfurt in October 2020, embarking on my German adventure after 11 years away.

Despite feeling prepared for my return, it wasn't quite what I had anticipated. Unfortunately, the timing wasn't ideal either, as another lockdown struck in November 2020. Being unfamiliar with Frankfurt and lacking acquaintances there didn't help matters.

However, I did manage to make new friends, connecting immediately with expats from various corners of the globe. It became my safe haven and comfort zone. Being surrounded by individuals from diverse cultures, speaking English daily, became indispensable for me. It had become an integral part of my identity over the past 11 years.

Returning to Germany wasn't as enjoyable as I had hoped. I felt isolated, different, and out of place. The daily immersion in German language and culture grated on my nerves. I sorely missed the familiarity of an English-speaking country. Doubts crept in – why did I think returning to Germany after 11 years abroad was a good idea? Was my decision rash? I felt discontented, with so much upheaval occurring in such a short span of time.

Then, everything changed once more. I began teaching German to the American military community, rediscovering my love for my native language. It became enjoyable, as I used it to help others. Making lessons engaging, I always encouraged my students, understanding the challenges of learning German.

Teaching brought immense joy, with lessons often extending beyond language to encompass discussions on culture, history, living abroad, family, international dating stories, insecurities, how we actually feel when we are in certain countries and environments…So many laughs and also tears at times. It created a safe space for sharing, fostering connections that endured beyond the classroom.

Teaching became a source of fulfillment, feeding my soul and aiding me in numerous ways. It was a beautiful exchange – me teaching, my students learning, and both of us sharing. I even met some clients in person, maintaining contact with others over the years.

While Germany may not be the ideal environment for me personally, helping others thrive in Germany has become a passion. It's a perfect fit, as I cherish my homeland and native language, while empathizing with the challenges faced by expats.

Though I've departed Germany once more, teaching will forever be a passion of mine. I understand the reasons behind my return and am forever grateful for the decision.

Following my time in Germany, my journey continued in Cape Town, South Africa...

It is always a delight meeting clients in person 😍
