Last night, tragedy struck local activists She and Li. After finishing up a food distribution for the unhoused in the downtown San Jose area, their emotional support dog, Cookie, was struck by a speeding mustang as they were making their way back to their car. The driver sped off to avoid accountability. After rushing her to the vet in an emergency, it was discovered that Cookie, lucky to be alive, was left with one broken leg, one dislocated leg and a dislocated rib cage. Currently on pain medication, Cookie is unable to walk and is waiting for a surgery operation to be able to recover. The operation, which she has not received a date for yet, is expected to be in the range of $6000 to $7000. She and Li, have already spent over $1000 on her emergency room visit, and are expected to spend more just on check ups leading up to and following the operation.
A little background on She and Li. The pair have been very active in community activism and outreach in San Jose. She, a San Jose native, and Li, who came here from Japan in her teens, got involved in the local black lives matter movement in may of 2020. Since then they have founded Soulution, a collective known for their community outreach to the unhoused population and advocating for human rights against the systems of poverty, racism and sexism among others. Challenges that the two founders have faced personally.
Among the challenges, the pair have been struck by hardship since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Just as the pandemic began, She's family, whom they were staying with, was evicted from their longtime home and forced into a smaller home displacing the pair. Since then, they have had an unstable housing situation spending their nights with various friends and living out of their cars. Upon the lifting of the shelter in place, they found themselves out of work due to reductions in the work force. To make matters worse, She is a recent college graduate meaning she has student loans to pay back. The money reserved for the payments, all of She's savings, has been used to pay Cookies medical bills so far.
