Women in Medicine and Research - Tu Youyou
One day, Du Bois, an American sociologist, said, โ There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise.โ Under the shade of this quote, letโs present one of the determined Chinese scientists, Tu Youyou. Tu Youyou was born in 1930 in China and studied pharmacology at Beijing Medical College. Although she did not gain any post-graduate medical degree, she was the first medical Chinese scientist to receive the Nobel Prize in science. Through her insistence and enthusiasm, she could isolate a new anti-malarial compound -artemisinin- from sweetworms. Besides that, she was the first volunteer as a human subject to test the new compound. While Malaria was collecting a lot of lives at that time, Youyou could, through her discovery, save a million lives.
"Every scientist dreams of doing something that can help the world" - Tu Youyou
