This chunker (Peri) snuck into the house yesterday totally abandoning her job as farm cat. I let her have a good nap inside and then about dinner time, put her back outside to go bop some field mice.

Happy 1st Birthday Duke Thorin Oakenshield of the Misty Mountain Homestead! He’s such a handsome boy and has quickly become a great livestock guardian. When not on guard duty, he’s so sweet and loves to give the famous “Pyr Paw” if he thinks you aren’t giving him enough attention.

Living on a farm there is always death and then there is new life. Last week we lost a laying hen and two meat birds. Today, this mama hen hatched 5 barnyard mix chicks!

This morning, we were awakened by unusual barks from our 5 dogs. I get up out of bed to go see what has their attention. In our fenced yard, there was a baby deer! A baby that could not have been more than a few days old. The poor fawn was cold and wet and scared to death. Our dogs had the baby frantically running in circles and I stepped in and scooped up the poor thing. I held her until my husband was able to come help put the fawn back on the outside of the fence. Once the baby was safe from the dogs, we took all the dogs back to the house so that the baby could wander back to its momma. But y’all!!!!! I got to hold a wild baby deer!!! 🥰🥰🥰

(8) Pearl Guinea Fowl in search of a new home. A few have started laying eggs but we are unsure of the male/female ratio. They are approximately 17 weeks old, fully feathered and no longer require a heat lamp. They are trained to go into the coop at night and are great for foraging the yard for unwanted bugs. Located in Bristol VA. Message me for more info.

Garden pics… we are late to the game but we finally have all of the seeds in the ground. This year we had (3) major homestead goals. One was doubling the size of our garden so we can grow more of our own food. Included in this expansion was adding a pollinator garden and building a coop for the Guinea fowl. We can’t wait to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

🇺🇸Happy Memorial Day! 🇺🇸 Thank you to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Let’s make this happen

We are about a week behind but the meat birds have been evicted from the brooder. The chicken tractor will give them so much more room to grow and gain weight before they go to freezer camp.

Rainy days = muddy puppy. Duke is now 16 weeks old and is 54 pounds! He’s going to be a big boy!

We have a new member of our farmily! Meet Duke Thorin Oakenshield of the Misty Mountain Homestead. Duke is the great great nephew of our very first Great Pyrenees, Magnolia Mae and has come to the homestead to learn livestock guardianship from Maggie and Daisy so that he can one day care for future goats. Duke spends his day eating, sleeping, chewing on any and everything and then wrestling with Daisy. He loves to explore the yard and true to the Great Pyrenees form, has an independent stubbornness about him. At his last visit to the vet, he weighed in at a whopping 30lbs! He is definitely going to be a big boy!

The girls are back in business! We switched things up a bit by adding a rooster to each coop, giving them more supplements like ACV and crushed egg shells, and adding more fruits and veggies to their diet! I also think having more daylight hours is helping! 🙌 🙌

Anyone want to go in and split an order of 13 Pearl Guinea Fowl? We have to order 13 to avoid a “small order charge” and we only want 6-7.

I can’t remember the last time we had our picture taken. It’s been far too long and now it’s something that I’m going to need more of.

Seeds for the fall garden have been started! I know I’m late to the game for some of these veggies, but life happens.

Meet Periwinkle… aka Peri… She is 12 weeks old and the biggest cuddle bug. She is calm, sweet, and inquisitive and doesn’t take any crap from her sister, Poppy.

08/07/2022

Meet Poppy! She’s a 6 weeks old calico kitty and the newest critter to join the homestead crew. On Wednesday June 29, we heard a mewing in the thick brush behind our back fence. We investigated and found a sweet kitten all on her own. We searched for other kittens or her mother but found nothing. What is astonishing about Poppy is how far she must have traveled on her own. We live in the middle of nowhere and we have no idea how she came to be at our homestead. None the less, Poppy is now part of our pack and when she’s older and stronger, she will become our first barn cat.

Pray for our country, not just today on her birthday but every day. May each of you have a safe and happy Independence Day!
