All of a sudden I’m counting down until December. 👀
Hey y’all! I think it’s time for some updates and exciting news.
But first, an anniversary.
It's now been a full year since I started this journey as a published author. I can say that it's been one of the best decisions I've probably ever made because I love doing this.
I might not have a huge brand with loads of books out yet, but I can only do better than the person I was yesterday. And I think one-year-ago me would be pretty astounded!
This brings me to my next update for you: for the rest of 2021, I’ll be working on two new books. I’ve already shared a chapter from one of them with my newsletter subscribers, so if you’re interested, I’ll drop a link to join my list below.
Otherwise, stay tuned for another update soon!
ICYMI:
This is the fastest I’ve read a book recently. It is well-paced, exciting, and a perfect fit for anyone who enjoys young adult fantasy.
Also fitting for the recent winter solstice!
Link to my full review of Shadow and Bone will be pasted in the comments.
More reasons to read (as if we need one other than it's fun) 😉
"If you can identify with a character in some way, you actually get to lead a different life (temporarily and, of course, in a limited way), says Oatley. Multiple studies have replicated these findings, Oatley says. And data suggests the same area of the brain actually gets fired up when people read and comprehend fictional stories, as gets activated when we’re in the process of understanding other people."
Why 'getting lost' in a good book is the break your brain needs right now “Transportation” — or the act of losing yourself in a book — makes you more empathetic, more creative and (hello!) it’s an escape.
I love a book that sends me back to its early pages, feverishly thumbing through for the hint that I didn’t take 200 pages ago.
Without a doubt, Serpent & Dove is one of my most favorite books I’ve read this year. I've written up a full review of it on my blog!

Serpent & Dove Review - Joy Lewis - Author I love a book that sends me back to its early pages, feverishly thumbing through for the hint that I didn’t take 200 pages ago. Shelby Mahurin’s Serpent & Dove is one of these books. Lou and Reid’s relationship was wonderful to watch as it unfolded, and the conflict between them was riveting. ...

BLURB
If Caia doesn’t escape, she’ll become an instrument of destruction.
Shadowed by her capable older sister, sixteen-year-old Caia would like nothing more than for the cursed magic bound to her family’s name to remain dormant inside her.
But the king has other plans.
Inside his fortress-like castle, King Arcturus has held the Blackthorn line captive for generations, and the birth of a second raiser in a single generation makes his court the envy and fear of the human and inhuman worlds.
The two necromancer sisters serve as more than trophies of his power; his plans include using them as instruments of war. When Caia discovers this future for her and escapes the castle that has been her cage, the king will stop at nothing to retrieve her before she flees the borders of Noverim.
Faced with the threat of losing herself to her powers, will Caia learn to master the dark magic before it consumes her?
Or will the king ensnare her as the unwitting commander in his conquest for power?

I Drew These 24 Women Of Different Body Types As Powerful Warriors I wanted to depict strong women warriors who do not necessarily look like the typical warrior. With different sizes, ages, and body types, each one feels like she has a rich backstory and history.
Wow! A lot can happen in a few months (I think we’ve all seen that many times over in the current state of affairs). I’ve been away from social media in that time, and I’ve got some updates that I’m super eager to share with you as a result.
First things first:
Wither Thorn has a release date. And it’s barely two months away.
I know, I know. It’s crazy soon 😳 But it’s time to get this out to you.
The ebook, paperback, and hardback will be available on Amazon starting September 16.
Next:
We have a cover! Y’all. It’s beautiful. But I’m keeping it under wraps for just a *little* longer. Don’t worry--I’ll drop it on this page soon.
Also, we adopted this cutie from our local animal shelter. She’s quite shy, so I’m pretty proud that she allowed me to take this picture. Meet Amp!
Stay tuned for some really exciting updates!
Don't give up on your dreams ;)

Library appreciation post 📚
Real talk, y'all: libraries are great. If you have a card, you probably have access to ebooks and audiobooks through your library, too. And according to a recent Gallup poll, Americans spent more time last year in libraries than at the movies. So you're in good company if you visit your library 😉
Happy Valentine's Day! 💝 I hope you're more appreciated than Denethor appreciates Faramir (see below).
