Adopt-A-Kiddo is here to help the children at Churches United transition back to school. This opportunity will ensure each child has all the supplies they need to have a successful school year along with new clothing as well.
Each student fills out a survey of their favorite things, (subjects in school, hobbies, etc.) to help our sponsors shop for their kiddo! Each sponsor will be assigned clothing needs or school supply needs and then paired with a child at random.

Thank you for giving our children an opportunity to start the school year confident & building them for success!

Just read the Pulitzer Prize winning book "Roots." There is a lot to process in this work. Though it seems obvious now, I realized when a slave character referred to the master as a "cracker," that this was in reference to whip-cracking. I admit this had not occurred to me before. It is a poignant read at a time when so many are working to elevate Juneteenth as a recognized holiday. The actors reading the audiobook are particularly fantastic if you enjoy listening to books. Have you read it yet?

I just adjourned my last clay county board meeting. I has been such an honor to serve as your commissioner and I will be carrying the stories you've shared, and the knowledge and experience I've gained into my next sphere of service to our community. While this chapter is closing, I am still dedicated to advocating for our needs and continued growth towards making our community the best possible place to live for our current generation and generations to come. I hope to see you out in the community soon. Blessings to you all in the New Year.

I finished this one minutes before my Libby App checkout ended. It was so good and would be a great title for a book club. Book clubs are a great way to build community connection especially during the cold months. You can get a library card for free and our library system even has book club kits available making starting a club or choosing your next title easy. https://larl.org/book-club-kits/

Congratulations to the award recipients. Each is a shining example of engagement in community to work cooperatively towards better lives for us all. Knowing each of you, you are probably more excited about the spotlight being shown on the work you are engaged in rather than your own achievements. So proud to have you in our community and thank you for your work.

I don't know the details on this yet, but I do know that the lack of affordable childcare options is a barrier for parents in our workforce, that providers and teachers should be able to earn a respectable wage and benefits for the critical and professional work they do, and that children in their most important brain development years should have access to quality loving care in a setting that is the best fit for the child and the family's needs.

An investment in early education and childcare gets a return of 7-12 fold depending on what study you read.
It's an investment in economic development. It's an investment in infrastructure. It's an investment in equity. This is our most solid investment in our future.

Libraries Can Unite a Lonely, Divided Nation 21/11/2022

I am very excited for our Moorhead community who recently passed a sales tax to support the building of a new library and community center.
This article about the critical role libraries will continue to play in our future states, "To recover from this epidemic of isolation, America needs to reknit its frayed social fabric. Many institutions can play a role in this 'Great Reknitting,' from schools and churches to businesses and voluntary associations. But there’s one institution that has long bolstered communities in an open and democratic way: America’s libraries. As the industrialist and great patron of public libraries Andrew Carnegie famously put it more than a century ago, 'A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. It is a never-failing spring in the desert.' His words ring true today."
I also love how libraries are described in here as "citizenship factories." I look forward to seeing the community's vision for this reknitting come to fruition in this building.

Libraries Can Unite a Lonely, Divided Nation The time has come for a “Great Reknitting” across America. The country’s most egalitarian institutions — its public libraries — are a crucial place to start.
