Premenstrual disorders, including premenstrual syndrome, may increase the chances of experiencing menopause before 45, according to new research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open.

Premenstrual disorders (PMD) encompass various symptoms that occur before menstruation, such as mood changes, bloating, cramps, headaches, food cravings, and sleep disturbances.

The study findings reveal an association between the presence of PMD and a higher risk of early menopause, defined as occurring before the age of 45. Additionally, it indicates a correlation between PMD and the occurrence of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS), like hot flashes and night sweats during menopause. VMS has previously been associated with cardiovascular events, elevated blood pressure, insulin resistance, and diabetes.

Healthcare providers may be able to identify women at risk for early menopause and subsequent health complications later on in life by better understanding this association. However, to fully assess health risks following menopause, more research is needed.

Are you feeling stressed? It's time to take a deep breath and engage in a practice known as cyclic sighing. Let's do it together right now.

1. Inhale halfway through your nose.

2. Pause briefly.

3. Inhale again, filling your lungs and diaphragm.

4. Exhale through your mouth, letting out a long, slow sigh.

Repeat this process for 2 to 5 minutes.

How does that feel? Cyclic sighing, also referred to as physiological sighing or the double inhale, can be a powerful tool for relieving stress and anxiety. It's the slow exhale, reminiscent of a sigh, that fosters relaxation, reduces stress, and relieves bodily tension.

A study published in Cell Reports Medicine in January 2023 compared cyclic sighing to various mindfulness techniques. While all practices had benefits, the cyclic sighing group showed the most significant reduction in respiratory rate (a sign of relaxation) and the most noticeable improvement in mood.

A recent study published in The British Medical Journal suggests that vitamin D supplementation may reduce the risk of major cardiovascular disease events (CVD) in older adults.
