The Conference of Childhood, Education & Society was held in Istanbul from 27 to 29 June and brought together attendees from 31 countries. We would like to express our gratitude to Istanbul Kultur Universityfor hosting our event.

We would also like to thank our keynote speakers, Prof Zsuzsa Millei from Tampere University, Prof Hasina Ebrahim from the University of South Africa (Unisa) Gauteng Region Gauteng Region, and Prof Mathias Urban from Dublin City University Ireland.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to all the participants who brought joy and engaged in valuable discussions, contributing to our understanding of early childhood education and care from various perspectives.

Dr Hasina Ebrahim is a Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of South Africa and UNESCO Co-chair in Early Education, Care and Development. Dr Hasina Ebrahim's research coheres around Early Childhood at the Margins with special reference to policy, practice and workforce development. In her work, she contests dominant framings of early childhood and shows its fragility for addressing diversity and equity. She advocates for engagement with complexity and intersectionality in unpredictable times for early childhood. Dr Hasina Ebrahim is part of a working group in the Early Childhood Cluster in the African Union and her current projects are on ECD workforce sustainability and systems for social justice and equity.

Mathias works on questions of integrated early childhood systems, diversity and equality, social justice, and professionalism in diverse sociocultural contexts. Dr Urban has over 20 years’ experience in designing and leading international collaborative research projects. He was awarded the ‘Marianne Bloch Distinguished Career Award’ by the international Reconceptualising Early Childhood Education network in 2018, and the DCU President’s Research Impact Award 2020.

Zsuzsa Millei (PhD) is a Professor of Early Childhood Education at Tampere University, Finland. Zsuzsa views early childhood education as a political, intergenerational, national and global space, childhood as a political form of being, and children as political actors with rights. Zsuzsa's research focuses on ‘child politics’: the many ways in which childhood and politics (power) intertwine, such as children being instrumentalised in politics or their lives being governed in line with political agendas. Zsuzsa has been collaborating with multidisciplinary scholars on an experimental project called 'Microbial Childhoods' that explores the role of children and childhood in biospheric communities. Additionally, Professor Millei is committed to fostering supportive and nurturing academic environments through positive collegial relationships.

Conference of Childhood, Education & Society team celebrates World Children’s Day to commemorate the Declaration of the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly on November 20, 1959.

For all children, regardless of their background or circumstances, we endorse the grant and protection of all rights of the child starting with “every child has the inherent right to life” Article 6.
