WyOasis
Our permaculture adventure in Medicine Bow, WY
I hope all of you wanting to permaculture in Wyoming can come and see what we've done. It has some good bones and lots of potential. The swales are working well.
Today, we finished pruning the peppers and tomatoes. The citrus and avocados are thriving. We are supposed to be at -7F tonight. We'll take a look at the recording thermometer to see how the temps hold for this coming week. The temp. is taken every 15 minutes, so there is good information on the rise and fall of the temperature in the greenhouse. If we get some sunshine daily, and if we don't lose electricity (not anticipating that to happen) I think all well be well.
Here are some more pictures from today, Jan. 24, 2021. We are still getting some harvest, but the beds are being prepared for winter greens. Now that all the squash vines have been removed, it is bright and sunny inside.
Today was nice inside the greenhouse at about 65F after the snow was removed from the lexan. We finished taking down the old tomato vines so they could recover and produce more. The trees are thriving, and the oranges are starting to ripen.
This is an amazing journey. Sit back and enjoy the entire video. What a vision.
50 years off-grid: architect-maker paradise amid NorCal redwoods In 1968, Charles Bello and his wife, Vanna Rae, moved onto 240 acres of redwood forest looking to live a simpler life off the land. They had spent their savi...
Here are the latest pix of the greenhouse. If you watch the video, I'd suggest speeding it up unless you get seasick!
The greenhouse is really green! These were taken on the 20th, and already the tomatoes are to the peak. We have a couple that are coloring up, the peas and beans are still producing, the squash of different varieties are running amok, and the peppers have some kind of eensy aphid-type, sucking, yucky bug. I need more ladybugs, as most flew out the windows.
The citrus and avocado trees arrived and are thriving. The tomatoes, beans, peppers, peas, lettuce and most importantly, basil, are growing inches each day.
The cardoons. The first picture was when it was transplanted from the garden in October. The middle picture was in December, the last was May 9th, 2020. They are now 5 1/2' tall and huge! I trim the bottom leaves and use them as mulch for the path. They take a bit of preparation for cooking. Use the newer leaves, trim the stalk, taking care to cut off the stickers (they are thistle relatives and they hurt!), cut them up and boil for 30 to 40 minutes, changing out the water a couple of times. This reduces the bitterness. Then add to your dishes, fry them, saute them, bake them, etc. They taste a bit like artichoke (another relative). They also have a very blue-green color once cooked. I'm wondering if they will dye fabric.
If anyone has good cardoon recipes or has used it as a dye, let me know.
These pictures are of the potato bed. The first was taken on April 27th. The 2nd was taken May 9th. The top of the retaining wall is 4' tall. The blue fabric covered pipe (gotta look purdy) is the tube that runs either underground to warm the soil in the fall or vents to the outside to reduce heat.
The December 2018 tour of Russ Finch's 35-year-old greenhouse. This is our inspiration.
Coming soon: This is a video from our visit to Russ Finch who designed the greenhouse. It was in December of 2018 with snow on the ground outside and 85F inside. His greenhouse is 35 years old.
We've been planting in the greenhouse. Lyle ran heavy twine from the roof peak to the support posts. The vine tomatoes will run along them for vertical growing. The bush tomatoes are on the ground. Beans are trailing on more twine, the artichokes are producing abundantly, the garlic and shallots are taking off, and the potatoes, onions, leeks, greens, and beets are peeking out from the ground.
This is a good article laying out what we want to do.
A WyOasis in Medicine Bow Imagine: citrus trees growing in Medicine Bow, Wyoming all year round. As unlikely as this might sound, Kani and Lyle Flansburg believe it possible and are taking the steps to make this unlikely scenario a reality. They have already built a greenhouse in Medicine Bow that is the beginning of this ci...
The interior of the greenhouse is almost complete. Some of the seeds have sprouted, and we created shade upcycling old sheets from the thrift shop.
The "title" picture was taken just after our last snow storm. Today's high was 17F!
Pictures of the build are updated at https://permies.com/t/110336/WyOasis-snow-Greenhouse-Build

It was 17F outside and 85F inside the greenhouse today! The artichokes are just about ready to pick. I'll post pictures soon.
We are now official! WyOasis, LLC is our permaculture business and education name. As we grow, we'll update our information.
