Color matching is one of the most basic ways animals camouflage themselves. They’re able to blend in simply by matching the color of their surroundings.

Donatella Versace’s Army Aims to Make Love, Not War
There’s no mistaking a Versace girl, even one in camouflage. In Milan today, Donatella Versace sent an elite corps of bombshells down the runway, in the house’s new Spring uniform. Just two months after the U.S. Army issued a new kit, called Operational Camouflage Pattern, to soldiers, Versace offered her take on the pattern and in the process turned the concept of camouflage clothing, popularized with the military in World War I, on its head.

Camouflage
Camouflage is the use of any combination of materials, coloration, or illumination for concealment, either by making animals or objects hard to see, or by disguising them as something else. Examples include the leopard's spotted coat, the battledress of a modern soldier, and the leaf-mimic katydid's wings. A third approach, motion dazzle, confuses the observer with a conspicuous pattern, making the object visible but momentarily harder to locate, as well as making general aiming easier. The majority of camouflage methods aim for crypsis, often through a general resemblance to the background, high contrast disruptive coloration, eliminating shadow, and countershading.

Arcturus Ghost Ghillie

I’m not a big fan of these “hairy” ghillie suits, which is why you’ll see them lower on the list. However, they aren’t bad if you don’t feel like going all out with the vegetation. The baseline camouflage is actually pretty good if you get the right color suit. Adding vegetation to this suit can work fairly well, but without the vegetation, you still have a broken-up outline, which hides your shape well. They can move in the wind, matching the rhythm and flow of the environment.

This package includes a zip-up top, bottom, headpiece, and rifle wrap. The rifle wrap is really just a strap with strings on it so you can literally lay it over your weapon. I’d get some rubber bands to help secure it to your gun. At $90, it’s a good suit for baseline camouflage and actually does a great job breaking up your outline.

Chameleon

Few animals are as famous for camouflage as chameleons, whose color-changing skills have made them icons of adaptability. The key is the chromatophore, a type of pigmented cell layered underneath chameleons' transparent outer skin. However, contrary to popular belief, chameleons don't actually change colors to camouflage themselves. Instead, scientists think they change colors to communicate.1

Certain hues signal certain moods; chameleons darken their colors when afraid and brighten them when they are excited. Some colors advertise that the animal is ready to mate.

Brushstroke

Brushstroke camo was developed originally by British paratroopers in WWII, literally using large brushes to paint different swaths of colour over their khakis before jumping into enemy territory. This homebrew pattern was a favourite of British special forces through the 1960’s because each soldier could customize his kit to his surroundings.

Desert camouflage has gone through a host of updates since the war in Iraq began, in an effort to make troops harder to spot in sandy and dusty environments there.

Background matching is perhaps the most common camouflage tactic. In background matching, a species conceals itself by resembling its surroundings in coloration, form, or movement. In its simplest form, animals such as deer and squirrels resemble the “earth tones” of their surroundings.

Mimesis is when an object appears to be something that its not. Prey animals and insects sometimes mimic leaves, twigs, and other objects that predators wouldn’t be interested in

10/12/2021

Some animals have the ability to change their colors and patterns to help them blend in with their surroundings. Animals such as octopuses and flounder fish can quickly change their appearance. Other animals change colors with the season. This seasonal variation helps them blend in with the environment at different times throughout the year. Here are some examples of active camouflage:

Sometimes animals and insects use what’s available in the environment around them to blend in. For example, they may let moss grow on their shell or attach sea shells to their body to conceal themselves

Disruptive coloration is a form of camouflage in which high-contrast patterns obscure internal features or break up an animal's outline. Disruptive coloration often co-occurs with background matching, and together, these strategies make it difficult for an observer to visually segment an animal from its background.

18/11/2021

Disruptive coloration is a form of camouflage that works by breaking up the outlines of an animal, soldier or military vehicle with a strongly contrasting pattern.

27/10/2021

Active camouflage or adaptive camouflage is camouflage that adapts, often rapidly, to the surroundings of an object such as an animal or military vehicle
