“MAGISH ”CAVALCATE ROCK NELLO SPAZIO SIDERALE
Buon volo
Di Leonardo Clausi - Il Manifesto 4/5/22
(Translation from the article)
The mystery, the dream and the journey. These are the three main ingredients in the ampoules and stills of G-delic alias Gabriele Tosti, shaman, composer, instrumentalist and producer originally from Rome but transplanted to London for years. Magish, his latest effort, definitively imposes him as one of the most authoritative voices of the vast and protean galaxy of what for simple convenience we will call space rock. G-delic has a long musical history behind (and in front of) it. It's not just the eight instrumental tracks on this album - entirely composed and played by him and mastered with guitarist and producer Gavin "Gav Ullulator" Griffiths (Ozric Tentacles, The Ullulators) in his studio in rural Somerset (we suspect with the help of some naughty elves) - to prove it, but also the experience as bassist of the Thunderdogs, of the band Circus Archaos, the pioneers of the alternative circus founded by Pierre Bidon at the end of the Eighties. Gabriele was also the leader and founder of another combo specializing in interplanetary travel, the London-based Dream Machine, with whom he released three albums.
BORN IN THE CLAUSTRAL but fertile forced interlude of the lockdown, Magish is a tribute, an act of love to psychedelic rock and its many forms. Tosti inhabits this language with a naturalness and mastery that betray his apprenticeship: the canon Gong / Ozric Tentacles (their flutist, Jon Egan, is part of the Dream Machine, Daevid Allen was a close friend of the family), but also the head of the Italian prog like Goblin and post-Barrett Pink Floyd. What is striking, in these dilated and vaporous rides in sidereal space (the length of 33 rpm makes the publication on vinyl as desirable as ever), is the absolute absence of mannerism.
The stylistic features are those of a native speaker, one who speaks this musical idiom, so to speak, without an accent: Magish is a small classic where, in addition to the skills of bassist, guitarist and keyboardist, a clear economy stands out - there is no single note in excess, no self-referencing - and musical ideas flow like a tranquil sonic river. Celtic potions, science fiction, extra-European ancestry find their difficult balance in the musical fabric of this soft carpet, sonorous but above all flying. Good flight

Thank you so much Massimo Salari for this wonderful review ❤️🙏
“Personally I have a great weakness for psychedelia in a general sense, both the derivative one from the Pink Floyd sound, and the cosmic or enthralling Hawkwind one, but those who in my cultural formation traced an indelible groove in the early 90s were the Porcupine Tree of prolific Steven Wilson and anyone who knows me well knows it. Here another world opened up to me, good melodies associated with hypnotic riffs, flying as well as ethereal.
I come to know in Italy of a band that in turn strikes me in this sense, it's called No Sound, with Giancarlo Erra in the cockpit. In this regard, over time I manage to find realities that equally intrigue me, such as Metronhomme or Aldi Dallo Spazio and Daniele Giovannoni's Karmamoi in the chair, in short, the genre is alive, even if not very popular with many fans. There is also another band that amazes for its inventiveness and genius, this is called Pelikan Milk, often also reviewed by myself, it is Alex Savelli's band. Savelli is one of our geniuses, always willing to churn out different solutions, a musical omnivore that ranges from Jazz to songwriting, also passing through psychedelia and Prog. In some of his recordings, the multi-instrumentalist Gabriele Tosti, aka G-Delic, is at his side and I'm going to talk about him.
With "Magish" the Roman musician is on his second studio album after "G - Delic In Space" of the now distant 2007. The disc composed of eight movements is recorded at Planet Utopia Studio and in the sound path we can also listen to the voice by special guest Eleonora Tosti, precisely in the song "Shazir". The artwork is also very intriguing by Elio Tosti and Mail Tosti for design.
Already from the first notes of "Orirides" we take off for a pindaric trip in which estrangement from the world is easily achievable. Øresund Space Collective and Ozric Tentacles come to mind, in their own right! Even more intense and refined is the named "Shazir" where an insistent rhythm makes it very difficult for us to remain still while listening. Sounds with an Arabic cadence are underlined by Eleonora's chorality. We return to space with "Space Flower", almost an intro that could also be heard in the first albums of the French Rockets in the 80s. Obviously no correlation, the underlining is only to make us understand the type of sound. The guitar is the protagonist. And here is the title track, "Magish", here is all the soul and musical culture of G-Delic,
a sly trend that catches you and exits you again from this world by directly transferring us to another dimension. If you can pass me the term, “Awan” is more commercial, thanks to the drum machine in evidence (sometimes also Dub) with a set of solutions that tend to make you dance. "Morning Trip" has the solution in the title, as does "In The Out And In", but this time we are in full Pink Floyd territory in the early 1970s. This mini suite of almost ten minutes is not by chance one of the songs on the album that I appreciated the most.
Nature, water, birds and sounds in the final “Peace Forest” where a male voice intones an almost tribal song to immerse us totally in this context. The guitar is the one who traces the melodies while listening.
G-Delic's psychedelia is delicate and gentle, it always has a sound cuddle to do without pushing too hard on the accelerator of alienation. The merit of "Magish" is precisely this, knowing how to dose the sounds wisely in favor of a satisfying mental and physical involvement. Mind in flight. MS”
