White-tailed sea eagles win over farmers thanks to successful Irish return 21/08/2024

A beautiful and important story of how White-Tailed Eagles, through their charm and grace, won over farmers in Ireland who had initially feared and protested their reintroduction 🦅

Lessons to be learned in Cymru.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Stori hyfryd a phwysig am sut yr enillodd Eryrod y Gynffonwen, trwy eu swyn a'u gras, dros ffermwyr yn Iwerddon a oedd wedi ofni a phrotestio i ddechrau eu hailgyflwyno 🦅

Gwersi i'w dysgu yng Nghymru.

Atlantic Puffin: Fratercula arctica

One of the world’s favourite marine birds, adored for its comedic appearance and bright coloured bill. To some it’s affectional known as the ‘clown of the sea’.

It is also one of our most threatened sea birds, classed as a red list species. The problems facing these birds including climate change, bycatch from fishing, overfishing and the recent impacts of bird flu.

It’s now come to the end of the nesting season for puffins along our Welsh coastal cliffs and rocky shores but there have been some encouraging signs.

This year, puffin numbers in the UK have started to increase. This has been met with excitement as it comes together with the announcement of a permanent end to Sandeel fishing - one of the main sources of food for puffins. This announcement means that Sandeel numbers will start to rise and natural systems can start to be restored, benefitting puffins and many other sea birds. ❤️‍🩹

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Pâl yr Iwerydd: Fratercula arctica

Un o hoff adar morol y byd, sy’n cael ei edmygu am ei ymddangosiad digrif a’i big lliw llachar. I rai mae’n annwyl ei adnabod fel ‘clown y môr’.

Mae hefyd yn un o’n hadar môr sydd dan y bygythiad mwyaf, sy’n cael ei ddosbarthu fel rhywogaeth rhestr goch. Y problemau sy’n wynebu’r adar hyn gan gynnwys newid yn yr hinsawdd, sgil-ddalfa o bysgota, gorbysgota ac effeithiau diweddar ffliw adar.

Mae hi nawr yn dod at ddiwedd y tymor nythu i balod ar hyd ein clogwyni arfordirol a’n glannau creigiog ond bu rhai arwyddion calonogol.

Eleni, mae niferoedd y palod yn y DU wedi dechrau cynyddu. Mae hyn wedi cael ei gyffroi wrth iddo ddod ynghyd â chyhoeddi diwedd parhaol i bysgota Tywodlyd - un o brif ffynonellau bwyd palod. Mae’r cyhoeddiad hwn yn golygu y bydd niferoedd y tywodlyd yn dechrau codi a gall systemau naturiol ddechrau cael eu hadfer, er budd palod a llawer o adar môr eraill. ❤️

🚨New blog post alert!

Our friends at Radnorshire Wildlife Trust are showing real leadership when it comes to process-led nature recovery at their Pentwyn Farm. It is time for others to follow that lead.

Like us, they have found that rewilding generates huge support, interest and hope; hope of a better future for Welsh wildlife.

“With wildlife declining at such an alarming rate, we decided it was no-longer enough to protect and manage fragmented pockets of wildlife as standalone units. Instead, we need to think about landscape scale management, increasing connectivity and reinstating natural processes so that nature can take care of itself. Rewilding is affordable, scalable and creates new habitat and opportunity for both wildlife and people.”

Mae ein cyfeillion yn Ymddiriedolaeth Natur Sir Faesyfed yn dangos arweiniad gwirioneddol o ran adferiad byd natur a arweinir gan brosesau ar eu Fferm Pentwyn. Mae’n bryd i eraill ddilyn yr arweiniad hwnnw.

Fel ni, maent wedi darganfod bod ailwylltio yn cynhyrchu cefnogaeth, diddordeb a gobaith enfawr; gobaith am ddyfodol gwell i fywyd gwyllt Cymru.

“Gyda bywyd gwyllt yn dirywio ar raddfa mor frawychus, fe wnaethom benderfynu nad oedd bellach yn ddigon i warchod a rheoli pocedi tameidiog o fywyd gwyllt fel unedau annibynnol. Yn lle hynny, mae angen i ni feddwl am reoli ar raddfa tirwedd, cynyddu cysylltedd ac adfer prosesau naturiol fel y gall natur ofalu amdani ei hun. Mae ail-wylltio yn fforddiadwy, yn raddadwy ac yn creu cynefin a chyfleoedd newydd i fywyd gwyllt a phobl.”

There is something about these ethereal creatures that makes us stop and wonder. 🦋
But we are destroying their habitats at an alarming rate. 🚨
In the UK, 80% of butterflies have declined since the 1970s.
But there is hope… just look at the abundance that we could see around us if we set nature free!

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Mae rhywbeth am y creaduriaid ethereal hyn sy’n gwneud i ni stopio a rhyfeddu. 🦋
Ond rydym yn dinistrio eu cynefinoedd ar raddfa frawychus. 🚨
Yn y DU, mae 80% o pili palod wedi prinhau ers y 1970au.
Ond mae gobaith… dim ond edrych ar y digonedd y gallem ei weld o’n cwmpas pe baem yn rhyddhau byd natur!

Why trees and big beasts belong together 17/04/2024

GUEST BLOG by James Robertson (British Wildlife Magazine)

'I no longer think of woodland as a fixed entity, a single habitat; for me, it includes any space where trees and shrubs are allowed to grow themselves, whether they dominate the canopy, are enriched with glades and openings or freckle pasture with shadows.'

Restoring native woodland in landscapes grazed by cattle and deer can be challenging without the use of intrusive fencing.

Across the Rewilding Network, we’re using seed islands – small enclosures protecting palatable species, such as aspen – to provide a pulse of growth before the protective fence can be removed.
