As we progress through the spiritual journey of Advent, the second Sunday traditionally symbolizes the virtue of Peace. The second purple candle that is lit on this day is known as the "Bethlehem Candle." Reflecting on the journey of Mary and St. Joseph to Bethlehem during the weeks leading up to the first Christmas is a good way to remain in a spirit of humble reflection and penance.

The Christmas story is one of simplicity. Our Lord and Savior was born in a manger with only his mother and father. His guests were shepherd, a few animals and the three magi. It is a heart-warming reminder of the true reason of the season. This year has been difficult for all of us but we cling to Hope. That amidst all of the confusion and fear that the pandemic has brought, God is with us, has always been and will always be with us. Jesus is the light of the world!

Luke 15:1-10

The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, 2 but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 So Jesus addressed this parable to them. 4 “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? 5 And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy 6 and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance. 8 “Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it? 9And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.’ 10 In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

WE GOT TO DO THIS

At The Feast, one of my closest friends used to be a terrible sinner. He had committed sins in the past that I didn’t think were possible to commit. That’s how bad his past was. But that’s not who he is anymore. Because the love of Jesus has transformed him into a new man.

I thank God I’m part of this Catholic movement called The Feast. I’m grateful I’m able to preach, disciple others, and play my role in building God’s Kingdom on earth even if I’m a sinner myself. I don’t deserve my leadership role in the ministry, but by God’s grace, I’m here and I get to do this.

If you are a sinner like me but are afraid to be judged, The Feast is the best place for you. Because here, we’re a bunch of sinners saved by grace and striving to be the people God wants us

25 Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them, 26 “If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? 29 Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at hi 30 and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’ 31 Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? 32 But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms. 33 In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.”

CHRIST FOLLOWER

The blessings that the community gave me was the conviction to bring Jesus into my life and be His follower, make Christian values the foundation of my family life, and love God above all.

To be a Christian is to be a Christ follower. To humbly obey where God sends us in ministry. To fall on our knees in worship. To let the Holy Spirit take over, using our time, talent, and treasure for God’s Kingdom.

As a Christ follower, are you interested or committed? Interested means being just “in the rest,” while committed means “come eat with Christ and be led.”

John 14:1-6

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. 4 Where I am going you know the way.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

A CHANGE OF HEART

Before we got married, Agirl told me, “I will be a working mom. I want to work even when we have kids.” I was fine with that because I knew she would be a great mom whether she worked or stayed at home.

But when we started planning to have a child, she had a change of heart. She said, “I want to stay home instead. I want to be hands-on in taking care of our children.” When I asked her why, she simply said, “I feel deep in my heart that home is where God wants me to be.”

I know there have been times when she questioned her worth. When she felt she could help more with the family finances. When she felt that house chores and taking care of the kids were ordinary, menial tasks. But whenever she searched her heart, she always felt God’s affirmation. She is exactly where He wants her to be.

Agirl and I now have three adorable daughters. Her yes to God’s will is one of the reasons we are having the time of our lives!

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 He began to teach them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. 6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

PROTECT YOUR PACKAGE

Years ago, my friends and I organized a concert for a popular Christian band. They required us to hire professional security for them. So we did. But on the day of the concert, I was surprised when two humongous guys who looked like gorillas were assigned to me.

I told them, “I’m not the star. You don’t have to guard me.” But they just crossed their hairy arms and stayed by my side. I decided I wasn’t going to argue with guys whose arms were as large as my waistline.

When the concert was over, the two giants escorted me to my car. When I finally got in, one of them spoke into his radio, “Package delivered, over and out.”

Huh? I was their package.

Friend, here’s the truth: God lives inside you. You must protect your package—because many thieves will try to steal God’s presence from your life.

Guard your treasure as the saints did. God has marked you with His seal.

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. 7 He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, 9 and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. 10 Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

CAUGHT UP IN A JAM

I was in an FX on my way to the office. It was a red light. Before I got out, I asked the driver if I could already open the door. He ignored me as he kept counting his bills. I looked left and right, then opened the door when a motorcycle hit it and the biker fell off.

The FX driver began to shout at me and blame me. I was on the verge of crying, too astounded to speak. Good thing, people around me defended me and stopped the driver from hurting me. When the police said I could go, I knelt before the victim to apologize and left with a heavy heart.

I could have raised my voice back at the driver as he shouted at me or simply ran away. But I chose to stay and admit I was at fault, too. I prayed for the forgiving biker as well as the driver who was scared of the consequences and pointed his fingers at me instead.

It’s hard to be humble when things are out of control. But when you learn to admit your mistakes and stop judging others, it’s when God exalts you.

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. 2 In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. 3 Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, “Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?” 4 But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. 5 Then he said to them, “Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?” 6 But they were unable to answer his question.

CHOOSE 'AND'

If there was a model that the Jews could look up to, it was Saint Paul. He was exceptional when it came to living according to Jewish law—a “Pharisee of Pharisees”—and was trained by one of the most esteemed teachers of his time. But Paul had to turn his back on everything he loved and believed in when he became a follower of Christ.

Have you gone through that challenge? To give up something or someone for your faith. To forget yourself and your loved ones in order to follow God. It seemed to me that to follow God’s will was an either-or situation.

But the truth is, God never asked us to choose between our self and Him. So, rather than seeing it as an either-or situation, we must realize that loving God is always an and situation. If I love God above all else, then I can love myself and others more as well.

God’s love is so vast and limitless that if I am filled with it, then I will overflow with love for others and the world around me.

12 Jesus went up to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. 13 When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

WON BY LOVE

The men whom Jesus chose to be His Apostles were ordinary people as we can see from the list of men He called in today’s Gospel. They had no wealth, no sterling academic background, and no social position. Jesus invited them, “Come, follow Me” and they left everything and followed Him. Jesus chose these men not for what they were but for what they can become under His influence and power.

When Jesus calls, He calls not the extraordinary people but the ordinary ones willing to do ordinary things with extraordinary love. He does not ask for their ability but their availability. He doesn’t always call the equipped but He will always equip those He calls.

It is either all for Him or a life of compromise. There is no in-between.+🕊️

22 Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. 25 After the master of the hous has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ 26 And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’ 27 Then he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!’ 28 And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. 29 And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the Kingdom of God. 30 For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

A DEATH SENTENCE?
I had a sore throat, a runny nose, a headache, some chills, and body weakness. The diarrhea came much later. Ordinarily, I would shrug off a temperature of 37.40 C as a common cold or flu. But this was no ordinary time. The World Health Organization had just declared COVID-19 as a pandemic and the whole Metro Manila was placed on quarantine. Belonging to the most susceptible segment of the population, fear overcame me.

A friend, an infectious disease doctor, said I didn’t meet the two criteria to warrant a test—no foreign travel and no direct contact with a COVID-19 patient. I had no choice but to stay at home and nurse myself. I gobbled up glasses of alkaline water, took an overload of vitamin C, and self-quarantined in a room, armed only with prayers and God’s grace.

GOD'S SMILE

At the very first Mass I attended after my spiritual renewal, I struggled over how much to give as the collection basket came around. I was set on giving P100 but I felt a prompting to give the biggest bill in my wallet. I resisted since I was a stingy person. But hey, a hundred bucks 32 years ago wasn’t that bad. But I eventually gave in to the prompting and offered the biggest bill in my wallet. To put it in Tagalog, nabunutan ako ng tinik—that’s how I felt. But more importantly, I felt God smile.

It was a small act of faith—a mustard seed step—but what came after overwhelmed me. I needed shoes; seven pairs showed up. I wanted to go to Hong Kong to attend a Pentecost celebration; someone gave me money for the trip.I was concerned with our increasing rent; I suddenly got an unscheduled raise. And there were many more.

I’m thankful for the blessings that God continuously pours into our lives. But more important than this is the grace He gives me to pursue the growth of this once mustard-seed faith. So I can know Him more and feel His smile.

10 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath. 11 And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, “Woman, you are set free of your infirmity.” 13 He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath, said to the crowd in reply, “There are six days when work should be done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day.” 15 The Lord said to him in reply, “Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering? 16 This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day from this bondage?” 17 When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.

BABY CHRISTIAN

In college, I joined a youth group. I fell in love with Jesus, but because I was young, I also fell into wrong beliefs. I would look up to God, but would look down on those who weren’t on the same wavelength with me. I would give honor to Him, but I would be a horror to some people. I would go to church, but I avoid the unchurched.

By God’s grace, I found my way to The Feast. From its teachings, I slowly learned how God values religiosity but not as much as spirituality. Learning about the saints is futile if we don’t strive to be one. Knowing the Holy Spirit is useless if we don’t aspire to be holy. Having a crucifix in our homes is pointless if we don’t help others carry their crosses.

Today, I am blessed to have come this far from being a baby Christian. But I’m also honest enough to admit I’m still and will always be a work in progress.

Thankfully, I have a God who loves me whether I’m being childi

46 As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. 47 On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” 48And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.” 50He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. 51 Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” 52 Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

TELL HIM

I have kids. More or less, I know what they need and what they want— from their food to their clothes, from the payment of school fees to places they want to go or movies they want to watch.

Yet I still ask them what they want. I don’t automatically give them everything or presume to know what they want or need. We still need to talk and listen to each other, nourishing and deepening our relationship in the process.

Moreover, I teach my kids to humble themselves in asking from their dad and realize that I provide for them because I love them.

It’s similar when it comes to prayer—we need to tell Jesus what we want. Why? Because He asks us. And also so that when we receive what we ask for, we know it’s from Him. By telling Him what we need, we nurture a relationship with Him.

So, go ahead and ask. Jesus knows what you need but He also wants to talk to you.

INCONVENIENT GOODNESS

We were relaxing after a day of preaching at one of the food stalls around the parish. I carried my piping hot siomai, fishballs, and barbecue to our table when a young boy held hand rags to my face. “Sir, please buy. Three for P50.”

All I could think of then was I was tired and hungry, and rags really didn’t look appetizing. “No, thanks,” I said. I tried to get past him, albeit awkwardly, so I could begin eating. But he was insistent. In my mind, I felt I “deserved” the snack and this time alone, since I had already done a good deed by serving God. Then it hit me. What’s the use of all these good things if I would only do them on my terms? Can I still do good even if it makes me uncomfortable, pushes me out of my routine, and surprises me when I least expect it?

I invited the urchin to our table and treated him to a full meal that evening. My friends also gave him some of their food and made him laugh with their stories. Finally, before we stood up, we made sure we bought all his rags for the night. We walked home blessed.

You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? 57 “Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58 If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. 59 I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

DO NOT DISTURB

"What’s wrong with what I am doing? Everybody else is doing it.” It’s a common excuse to pass off something wrong as acceptable. When we have this attitude,we become spiritually complacent.

This “herd mentality” is a fallacy or a wrong way of thinking. Consequently, it has become acceptable in society for couples to live in without being married, erring citizens bribing the police, women terminating unwanted pregnancies through abortion, and many other immoral issues.

Why have we not been able to recognize this deception and overcome the situation? Maybe we have put up a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the doors of our hearts and shut out the Holy Spirit from our lives. If we don’t make time for God through prayer, Scripture, service, and community, we miss out on the guidance of the Spirit. When we do, we also miss out on God’s promise of an abundant life (John 10:10).

39 Jesus said to his disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” 41Then Peter said, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?” 42 And the Lord replied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. 44 Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 then that servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful. 47 That servant who knew his master’s will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; 48 and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

ARE YOU WITH THE LORD?

Don’t ask me for details, but one day, I offended a friend. She chided me, “To think that you’re already with the Lord.”

“Already with the Lord” is a jargon which means one has experienced an intense spiritual awakening and so now, one is, yes, already with the Lord. I experienced such a spiritual renewal and I have endeavored to be godly.

Not surprisingly, I fail now and then. And because of my undesirable deeds, I have disappointed people, if not totally caused them to stumble in their own faith journey.

This calling is priceless, enormous grace. B

GOSPEL FOR TODAY
Luke 10:1-9

The Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. 2 He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. 3 Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. 4 Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. 5 Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ 6 If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. 8 Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, 9 cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.’”

WHO DID WHAT?
My husband can accurately predict my future. When we were still dating, he predicted I would be a speaker. I was a stutterer back then, so I didn’t believe him. But one day, I found myself speaking in front of crowds multiple times a month. For whatever reason, I don’t stutter when speaking in public.

He also predicted I would own a marketing agency. I was already happy as an individual consultant then. I didn’t want the stress and responsibility of managing a team and pleasing clients. So, I shrugged off his statement. Today, I’m managing a team and serving clients with our own small agency.

I have proven that, oftentimes, my husband is God’s messenger. His name is Angelo, by the way, which means divine messenger.

God uses people not just to make His plans known to us, but also to assure us of His presence in our lives. With His strength, He enables us to accomplish His purposes for us. We achieve many things in His Name!
