A few years ago my auntie told me the NBC affiliate in Albuquerque hired a news anchor who was Navajo. That was when I first learned about Colton. I decided to “cold” email him to introduce myself. He responded and graciously invited me to the studio to watch him anchor a show. That single experience was so influential to my own decision to pursue a career in this industry. 🌟 I can only hope to pay it forward for others someday! 👏🏽

One of the coolest parts of my trip to Winnipeg was visiting the studio and newsroom at APTN.
APTN launched in 1999 as the first national Indigenous broadcaster in the world. Today, they have their own studios, numerous bureaus across Canada and reach over 10 million households.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court handed down a major decision Thursday in the Haaland v. Brackeen case, affirming the constitutionality of the Indian Child Welfare Act by a 7-2 vote.

JUST IN: The U.S. Supreme Court voted to uphold the Indian Child Welfare Act in a 7-2 decision. This is a huge win for tribal nations in their efforts to protect Native American children.

A celebration with Secretary Deb Haaland did not go as planned on Sunday morning at Chaco Canyon.
Some Navajo citizens blocked the road and did not allow anyone to pass.
They told me they are not happy with Interior’s decision to block new oil and gas projects on federal lands near the park for the next 20 years, saying it would impact them financially.

At ICT, we know great things are often born out of adversity. Anchor and Managing Editor Aliyah Chavez wants to tell you the story of how the ICT Newscast came to be. It is one of resilience, grit and enthusiasm to reach the goal of being storytellers just like our ancestors.
At the end of 2022, the tireless efforts of our growing broadcast team culminated with a major milestone when Arizona PBS aired the ‘ICT Newscast with Aliyah Chavez’ on its main channel every weekday in December.
It is our goal to get our newscast on every major PBS station in the country — and in a prime time slot. We can do it. And we will do it.

We’ve got good news for a greater audience. The ICT Newscast with Aliyah Chavez will air on the Arizona PBS main channel in December.
Arizona viewers—tune in at 5:30 pm MST starting Monday, Dec. 5 through Friday, Dec. 30 for daily news and analysis about Indigenous communities, featuring stories by an award-winning team of Indigenous reporters.
This milestone comes less than one year after the half-hour, weekday broadcast was officially rebranded as the ICT newscast with Aliyah Chavez in January 2022.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced a $500,000 grant to IndiJ Public Media, an independent non-profit news organization that owns ICT, formerly known as Indian Country Today.
