From Toronto Urban Growers:

Are you seeking a deeper understanding of urban agriculture and sustainable cities?

CVFN 411 Dimensions of Urban Agriculture

In this fully online course, you'll explore the roles, benefits, and potential risks of urban agriculture from the perspectives of health and food security, economics, the environment, and socio-cultural issues. Readings, videos, and online discussion will link to current topics in both the Global North and South, including analyses of power and privilege, Indigenous issues, and the COVID pandemic.

Course starts January 15, 2024. CVFN 411 is part of the four-course Urban Agriculture Certificate Program at Toronto Metropolitan University.

Also offered this winter:
If you have a particular interest in urban food systems and food security, the Chang School is also offering CFNY 408 – Urban Food Security in Winter 2024, as part of TMU's Food Security Certificate. Over half of the world’s population now lives in cities. So, ensuring safe and affordable food for urban populations is a real challenge even for advanced industrial economies, and even worse for developing countries where resources are limited and poverty rates exceed 50 percent. The recently revised course will examine the unique challenges of creating food security in urban areas, and responses to these challenges.

To register for CFNY 408, contact Reg Noble (Academic Coordinator) at [email protected].

Day seven of the Mimico Creek industrial spill has our Rescue Team continuing the search for wildlife affected by the sludge-like run-off in the aftermath of the 6-alarm fire in Etobicoke.

So far now, 88 birds (86 mallard ducks, and 2 Cooper’s hawks) have been brought in needing help. Tragically, 10 patients have died despite our team doing all they could – one was the first Cooper’s hawk who was admitted completely covered in chemicals and oil. The terrible substance is harming more and more species – including mammals who are difficult to spot and capture.

Heartbreaking sightings of dead animals like beaver and mink are being reported, and species like herons have been seen eating contaminated fish from the creek. Just yesterday, our Rescue Team caught sight of this white-tailed deer standing in and likely drinking the contaminated water. Around this time of year, there’s a chance she’s also still nursing young.

Our Rescue Team continues to do all they can to find and capture as many affected wildlife as possible, while our team at the centre puts in hour after hour of treatment, medical checks, baths, supportive care, and more.

Please be on the lookout for any wild animals in the area of Mimico Creek, between the 401 and Lake Ontario, who appear sick and/or covered in oil, and birds who are excessively preening or shaking their wings. Some animals may have even left the area, and we appreciate the public’s help to watch out for them. Call in sightings to our Wildlife Hotline at (416) 631-0662, we’re open 9am to 6pm every day.

We are so grateful to our hard-working staff and volunteers, some of whom have been coming in on their days off or working long hours, members of the public who have reported sightings and those who have generously given to help with the rescue and rehabilitation effort. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Went to Christ The Good Shepherd Ukranian Catholic Church for Easter Sunday Service near the corner of Birmingham and Sixth St. I introduced myself to Father Terry who is so cheerful and upbeat! He has seen my signs across the street in support of Ukraine. I have long admired the old church with beautiful flower planters. Wow, it is beautiful inside! I enjoyed the Easter Service and watching a young boy and his family’s Easter basket get blessed. Delightful family. https://www.christthegoodshepherd.com/
