How do you ensure your consistent wellbeing focus? Weekly yoga? Annual retreats? Daily self-care? As educators, we need extra attention to our own wellbeing to make sure we can support sustainably.

Learning about how coaching can help maintain a framework to keep the balance is one way of doing so.

As language development educators, we are passionate about developing communication skills in our learners. However, the emotional demands of education and support can be significant. It's vital to prioritise our own emotional wellbeing to ensure we're providing the best possible support to our learners. Performance for us and our learners/clients will only peak if our wellbeing is at a peak too.

This involves cultivating self-awareness, setting boundaries, and engaging in regular self-care practices. It's also crucial to build a strong support system through supervision, peer support, and mentorship. By developing coping strategies, reflecting on our experiences, and seeking ongoing professional development, we can effectively manage to perform at a required standard.

Prioritising our own emotional wellness empowers us to create a more supportive and positive learning environment for our learners which means we care for ourselves so we can continue to make a difference ...

Here are our top tips:

Which are on your list to keep in mind this week?

1. Self-Awareness: Understand your personal triggers and reactions to develop healthy coping mechanisms.
2. Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between your professional and personal life. Define work hours, breaks, and limit availability outside coaching sessions.
3. Self-Care: Prioritise self-care routines that promote mental and emotional health, such as exercise, mindfulness, and adequate sleep.
4. Support System: Engage in regular supervision or peer support with fellow coaches or mentors to discuss challenges and seek guidance.
5. Coping Strategies: Develop a toolkit of stress management techniques, like deep breathing or mindfulness practices.
Reflection: Cultivate a habit of reflecting on coaching sessions to process emotional experiences and maintain balance.
6. Professional Development: Continuously enhance your coaching skills and knowledge through ongoing training.
7. Breaks and Time Off: Schedule regular breaks and time off to prevent burnout and maintain enthusiasm.
8. Client Expectations: Set realistic expectations with clients and support accountability on their end.

We all need heroes.

With an impressive start to the Paris 2024 Olympics, we have chosen ours. Simone Biles, you know when enough is enough, when to take a step back, replan, build yourself up again, and move forward with endless energy, and letting go of perfection to be exactly that: perfect.

" Sometimes, she takes an extra steadying step. Even her stumbles seem graceful. Because if Biles has taught us anything over the last decade, it is to reframe the way we think and talk about star athletes, to refuse the instinctive deification that is really also a form of dehumanisation. To stop demanding perfection and miracles as a condition of our love. Biles is perfect, because she isn’t."

The question is how to learn from these moments and use the learning to be better every day. Not perfect - just better than before. Be the hero, every day.

Her example is one of true courage and strength. What can you take from her commitment and foresight?

For a while, language educators follow their teacher training, and then classroom reality hits. Stress and challenges lead to burnout daily. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/markcperna/2024/01/03/no-more-teachers-the-epic-crisis-facing-education-in-2024/)

Over time educators notice that language learners don’t fit the formulas. To be honest, many educators don’t fit the prescribed formulas either and will discontinue the methods and techniques learned earlier on occasion and adopt new best practices to work with. Experience, intuition, resources available… call it what you will, but sooner or later educators look into finding ways to think outside the box. Paradigm change is here. (https://ssir.org/articles/entry/a_revolution_begins_in_teacher_prep and https://www.researchgate.net/publication/325271454_Teacher_Education_Policy_and_Practice_in_Europe_Challenges_and_Opportunities)

To have a discipline instead of instruction using inquiry, where long- and short-term goals and strategies are understood in their complexity using dialogue and partnership-based interactions. Where compassion and direct communication go hand in hand to support effective learning, without the stress of syllabi.
If you feel out of place and your intuition tells you to validate your approach rather than follow training, explore language coaching. It offers flexibility, allowing learners to break free and keeping curiosity and exploration alive. It offers genuine teacher and learner wellbeing. (https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/the-english-learner-population-is-growing-is-teacher-training-keeping-pace/2023/02)

Language coaching works with flexibility, allowing learners to break free from traditional constraints present in their learning histories. It’s about learning through curiosity and exploration, encouraging learners to shape their own paths. Collaboration creates a learning environment that values each individual's journey and allows creativity to open up new avenues of thought.

Of course, this is not a new mode of learning – the ancient Greeks, Socrates, to be specific, used the Socratic method, which involved asking probing questions to stimulate critical thinking and illuminate ideas to encourage students to explore concepts through dialogue and reflection. After centuries of rote learning and twisting curricula to fit prescriptive shapes, we might return to effective ways of guiding learning without force. (https://instituteofcoaching.org/resources/how-use-socratic-questioning-coaching)

If you feel constrained by conventional methods, consider language coaching as a way to validate and expand your teaching approach. Listen to your intuition and prioritise meaningful connections in the learner’s developmental process.

Learners Bounce Back with Coaching - Let's Demonstrate How

To date, numerous studies highlight the positive impact of coaching on resilience and overcoming setbacks. Coaching significantly enhances self-efficacy, crucial for resilience, and reduces anxiety and stress, which are common barriers to learning languages and communicating to the best of our abilities. This equips learners to handle challenges more effectively.

As practising coaches, at ILCA we are fully aware and have often experienced that real-world coaching scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of resilience-building techniques. Learning programs integrating coaching report improved outcomes, with students showing higher retention rates and employees exhibiting better problem-solving skills and adaptability.
First-hand accounts from our graduate coaches and learners provide compelling evidence. Many learners attribute their ability to overcome language learning obstacles to the support and empathy provided by coaching; strategies and action plans co-created with their coaches. Frequent outcomes are improved confidence, motivation, and a renewed sense of purpose in the form of revised learning goals.

Theories in psychology and education strengthen the effectiveness of coaching in resilience-building. Growth Mindset Theory (Carol Dweck) helps individuals view setbacks as opportunities for growth, while Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan) emphasizes the importance of autonomy, relatedness and competence. Coaching addresses these needs by providing personalized support and building supportive, agency-focused contexts for learning. Positive Psychology is also a key theoretical and practical contributor to language coaching.

These theories provide a comprehensive framework for understanding and fostering personal development. Growth mindset offers a belief system, positive psychology provides the tools and focus areas, and SDT outlines the necessary conditions for motivation and growth.

Coaching is not just a buzzword - it is a proven method for helping learners bounce back from setbacks, enhancing motivation and regulating agentic learning environments. The evidence is clear: coaching makes a significant difference in building resilience.

At ILCA, we help you learn how to develop resilience, ensuring each of your learners can face obstacles with confidence and determination.

💛Why Choose? Use Both!

Language coaching isn’t here to replace your beloved language classes; it’s here to make them even better! By combining language coaching with conventional teaching, you get the best of both worlds.

💙Why? Because:

• Strong Start: Coaching creates solid foundations and well-calibrated groups with clear goals, making classes smoother and more effective.
• Ongoing Boost: Coaching helps break through learning blockages and re-energises motivation, keeping you on track.
• Targeted Success: Need to nail a presentation or exam? Coaching tailors your prep to hit those goals perfectly.
Maximise and align individual learning paths, and create a supportive, integrative space. Language coaching adds that extra S-T-R-E-T-C-H to make learning effective.

💜Whether you’re a teacher, learner, or business, combining ILCA-certified language coaching with conventional methods leads to better outcomes and a more fulfilling learning journey.

Our latest article: A quick search on LinkedIn results in About 1,610,000 results for the term „language coach”. We cannot conclude that there are that many language coaches on the market, however, it is a clear indication of „language” and „coach” appearing in the same profile, which means those who deal with language (or did at some point), also have coaching skills.
But why do we still need a human language coach when there are so many apps available and AI has entered the language teaching market with the speed of a top-tier Tesla?
In the evolving world of language coaching, both AI-powered apps and human coaches offer unique benefits. Here’s a comparison of what each can do, helping you see how best to support your learners for their language learning journey. ...

What an event!!! It has been an incredible experience organising, hosting and speaking at the 3rd International Language Coaching Conference in Budapest from June 7-9.

To say the least, we have truly grown as a community, expanding during the event and ever since to include many who could not attend. We truly believe our impact will build a language educator’s community that builds on trust, support and being vulnerable - not on marketing turns that only sell a product. Those speaking at the conference reminded us that our mission is to serve our learners, collaborate with colleagues and peers, and ensure that freelancers and those in organisations can use coaching frameworks to create autonomous and agentic learning environments.

We saw examples of grit, professionalism and confidence rarely seen in such a short timespan. The depth of research and personal practices highlighted the fact that we all approach language coaching from various perspectives, yet all in alignment with ILCA principles.

Insights, learning and ideas emerged like the water from the Music Fountain on Margaret Island where we met to embark on an exciting additional day that helped us centre ourselves on Day 3 and bring back our focus to our own needs and connect with each other, to be stronger.

Based on the many feedback messages we received, our organisation, choice of speakers, venue, program design went way beyond expectations for all 70+ attendees and speakers, despite the heat.

ILCA is ever so grateful for attending, to speakers and the audience alike. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the venue at ELTE University, Budapest, and the tech team recording plenaries and TED-style talks, workshops, panel discussions.

You will be seeing further posts from us as we unpack the richness of this event.

We announced our latest addition to the ILCA Team: a Board Chair. Congratulations Yoder and a new Board member: Vizir – congratulations!
Our final announcement is our conference location for next year: Spain. Details coming up soon with the exact venue and date to be posted.

We are sharing a few pictures to help you see the vibes present throughout: the support, the depth, the connections and the fun.
