Cityscape of Aizawl

If one ever travels to the city of Aizawl by road, of course post sundown, the city ecstatically welcomes anyone with a sight to behold. Ranges of hills are blanketed with studs of city lights as the stars engulfs the pitched black sky.

And yes the stars, they are always there, present every night, each time of the year to behold their nature with marvel and beauty.

Si-âr l Star

Botanical Silk
Botanical Silk at first glance emulates the classic Mulberry silk. But let’s get to know our Silk Yarns better shall we?

These silks are a new introduction into our array of natural yarns at r.loom. Naturally composed with smooth surface, we have challenged ourselves to develop Puan that have lesser slippage, dense and for one to have more control and secure them taut on the waist.

Botanical silks are fibers extracted from plants and trees, and not silkworms. They are soft to touch, light in weight and ensure a lustrous and silky silky drape.

Inspiration :
Senior(zeh) | Senior motif

The word ‘senior’ is the same word and meaning borrowed from the English language. Although traces Senior patterned Puan are found even as early as the 1920’s, it was only in the late 1940’s when the motif was coined with a name of its own. Word has it that it was two industrious “senior” women, presumably spinsters who replied “Senior” when asked what they were weaving in awe and devotion.

Eventhough the motifs require no further necessity for extra shafts and lifts, a particular drafting structure and warping pattern called ‘tahruih’ allows a weaver to play around with endless(geometric)designs.

The motifs as seen on the surface of the Puan could easily resemble dots of micro beads. Or perhaps the little dots of stars in the night sky that one could perceive with the naked eye.

Si-âr | Star

Inspiration :
Arsi Pâr | Star Motif/Pattern

The Arsi Pâr motif is a contemporary of the Lace Pâr motif and both are quite frequently confused with one another. A pattern that was popularly adorned by women in the 1950’s and the 1960’s, it’s safe to say that this was the turning point of the Mizo Puan evolving into a more “romantic” aesthetic.
It takes 12-14 lifts or ‘hnahchawi’ on the loin loom to develop these motifs, and it is quite frankly a painstaking process. Like it’s namesake, the motifs are beautifully woven over contrasting base colour to embody the starry night sky.
