π Bridging the Digital Divide One Device at a Time π
Imagine the warm tropical breeze π΄ and the lush landscapes of Punta Cana, a destination where many seek relaxation and adventure. Now, picture the local schools like Mi Casita Linda in Veron and Don Juan Santana School in El Suero, where the reality of education is starkly different from the holiday environment. These classrooms are crammed and basicβlacking air conditioning and sufficient windowsβbut are filled with students eager to learn. In a tiny neighboring casita, an adorable 85-year-young lady, Donna Rosa, happily prepares lunch for the entire class as part of her daily routine π².
During a recent visit, I witnessed the transformative power of technology in these settings. Alongside Mrs. Jean Dye of the U.S. nonprofit organization, The International Circle of Friends, we delivered three new laptops and a printer to these schools π₯οΈπ.
The laptop donations were made possible by a heartfelt act of kindness from a private donor. Thousands of miles away, a thoughtful traveler preparing for their vacation in Punta Cana had an ingenious idea. Instead of packing just personal items, they included three small laptops (Thank you!! π).
The joy and appreciation from the students and staff were palpable. These devices are not just tools; they are windows to a whole new world of learning and information π.
How Can We Help? π‘
Many of us travel with multiple gadgets that keep us connected while we explore new destinations. Next time you pack your bags for Punta Cana, consider including an extra laptop, iPad, or tablet. Donating a new, used, or refurbished device is a straightforward yet profound way to impact education here.
Unlike shipping donations, which can be deterred by high import taxes and logistics, carrying an extra device in your luggage is a game-changer for a local school. A single device can enable a teacher to project learning content for a classroom of 40 students! π«π©βπ«
If you're planning a trip to Punta Cana and have a spare device, please do reach out and message meβI will gladly connect you with a school in need π€.
We can make a difference, one device at a time! π

π How It Works:
Invite a Guest β‘οΈ Schedule a guest speakerβthis could be a professional in the field, a fellow educator, or even an upperclassman. Keep their identity a secret until the session begins.
Preparation β‘οΈ Give students advance clues about the guest's background and ask them to prepare questions related to the topic the guest specializes in. They can even try to guess who the speaker might be!
Reveal and Q&A β‘οΈ During the session, reveal the guest's identity and allow students to engage with them through a Q&A, gaining insights into real-world applications of their studies.
Post-Session Reflection β‘οΈ Have students reflect on what they learned and how it could apply to their studies.
π€ Why Itβs Engaging:
The element of surprise and the opportunity to interact with a real-world expert can significantly increase student interest and participation. It encourages active learning and curiosity, making the digital classroom experience more dynamic and personal.
