Yesterday, in her traditional New Year’s Eve message to her nation, the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, shocked the world when she announced that she was going to abdicate her throne, in favor of her son, Prince Frederick, who will become King of Denmark on January 14.

As a person of Danish heritage, I’m sad to see her go. She was a great monarch who is deeply loved by the Danish people, and ruled with more grace, class and dignity, than the world has seen for generations.

With one exception, of course - even Queen Margrethe chose to publicly subdue the celebrations of her own Golden Jubilee last year (50 years) after hearing of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, her beloved cousin.

Long live the Queen…Mother!
