When I was in High School, I worked in our print shop with one of my teacher/mentors. I remember one day having a conversation after changing out some ink plates on the offset printer, having just made new ones for the next pages of a newsletter.
I looked forward to working in that printshop. I must admit the sound of the press, the smells of the inks, and the feel of the papers, the seeming magic of seeing a printer drum rolling over blank pages producing information in legible print was such a visceral experience for me. I looked forward to those days working in that printshop.
My teacher looked at me at one point and said something akin to, "Look, Rick, you seem to love this work. You should consider going into publishing."
I never let go of that love or possibility as I moved through a wonderful career in the performing arts, of which I am still actively engaged with.
However, when an opportunity came along a few years ago, with new technologies in the independent publishing business, and following a request from a mentor who wanted to publish a book to have me help self publish it, Donn Poll and longtime friend and cohort, Dina Delaney, my wife, and I started the author help service and independent hybrid publishing company, A3D Impressions.
We now have several amazing authors in our catalogue with titles covering topics ranging from performing art memoirs, poetry, short stories and health and wellness.
Today we are launching a series of summer video blog posts that allow you to meet our authors and hear from them about their lives, passions and books.
First up is Donna F Brown, Author and Co-Founding member of Chicago 1970s band, Medusa, and author of Finding Medusa. Donn Poll, Creative Director, and I speak with Donna about her journey with the band and how her amazing life story is captured in this personal memoir that sheds light on the evolution and origins of 70s Progressive Rock and so much more.
She and her husband, Gary Brown, close out the interview with a delightful rendition of one of their songs from their home studio setting.
Take a look here, and check out our A3D Impressions website, while you're there. You may enjoy some of our titles for a good summer time read!

Awareness3D Love Difference Lying in bed, I heard the rain on the roof last night. “Good.” I won’t have to water the impatiens. It’s comforting, for some reason. Probably has to do with childhood or the rhythm or something primordial. I wondered about how the sound of rain falling on our roofs in the middle of the nigh...

Richard Avedon and my grandfather had very little in common. Except in the 1960s they each snapped photos that still hold my imagination (below). Snapped, in the case of Avedon, might not be the best term. But Grandpa’s is a snapshot. (Avedon (1923-2004) was a famed photographer and my grandpa (1901-1996) was a nondenominational minister.) Both photos are of midcentury women — in their 60s to 80s —at ritual gatherings; one… [ 438 more words ]
