Breastmilk doesnât lose its benefits with age. In fact âhuman milk in the second year postpartum contained significantly higher concentrations of total protein, lactoferrin, lysozyme, and Immunoglobulin A.â (Perrin, 2016). In the second year (12-23 months), 448 mL of breastmilk provides:
* 29% of energy requirements
* 43% of protein requirements
* 36% of calcium requirements
* 75% of vitamin A requirements
* 76% of folate requirements
* 94% of vitamin B12 requirements
* 60% of vitamin C requirements (Dewey, 2001)
âHuman milk expressed by mothers who have been lactating for >1 year has significantly increased fat and energy contents, compared with milk expressed by women who have been lactating for shorter periods. During prolonged lactation, the fat energy contribution of breast milk to the infant diet might be significant.â
(Mandel, 2005)
The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until 2 and beyond for broth developed and developing countries. The American Academy of Family Physicians notes that children weaned before two years of age are at increased risk of illness (AAFP 2008).
âAntibodies are abundant in human milk throughout lactationâ (Nutrition During Lactation 1991; p. 134). In fact, some of the immune factors in breastmilk increase in concentration during the second year and also during the weaning process. (Lawrence & Lawrence 2011, Goldman 1983, Goldman & Goldblum 1983, Institute of Medicine 1991)
Scientific research by Katherine A. Dettwyler, PhD shows that 2.5 to 7.0 years of nursing is what our children have been designed to expect (KellyMom, Dettwyler 1995).
"It's the lucky baby, I feel, who continues to nurse until he's two." US Surgeon General Coello-Novello (1990).
Sheâs 3.5 and yes we are breastfeeding. Not still, not extended, itâs not an extension of anything with a time limit or expiration, itâs just breastfeeding.

đš Did you know a CAR SEAT is one of the best ways to protect a baby during a tornado?
If severe weather is possible - plan a way to have a car seat in the safe space already or easily acccessible.
For toddlers, a bike helmet adds extra protection.

A lovely new study was published recently on soothing crying babies and settling them to sleep. The study told us what we all know in practice - babies are soothed by contact and movement (together), and they need it for a sustained period of time. They found that walking / moving with a crying baby in arms for 5 mins followed by 5-8 mins of sitting with baby promoted sleep, and helped baby to stay asleep when laid down. If the baby was laid down as soon as they went to sleep they woke back up (we all know this to be true!). They noted that the 5 min of moving promoted sleep in a crying baby but not a non crying baby btw.
You might look at this study and think - âwe already know this,â and in large part youâd be right - but the reason that I think studies like this are really important are because it contradicts the incorrect messages that parents get from society about not holding their baby, or that babies are manipulating them. Studies like this, routed in physiology and neurology give parents a kind of permission to respond to their babies and to meet their contact needs without feeling guilty or that they âshouldâ be doing something else. Itâs ok to walk and rock your baby to sleep.

Ge**er infant formula recalled due to possible contamination The maker of a popular powdered infant formula is voluntarily recalling one of its products.
Bedsharing & Safe Sleep: letâs talk about how they can be done together as safely as possible.
Everyone wants their baby to be safe & healthy but sometimes our prenatal plans turn out differently than expected. There are so many reasons parents choose to bedshare but the shame, guilt, and fear from the medical field and popular culture in America forces mothers to lie to their pediatricians about their sleep situations. Additionally, the lack of easily available information on safe bedsharing forces parents to accidentally sleep in unsafe and even fatal conditions for their baby. However, when done safely, there can be some amazing benefits to bedsharing. Here are some quick facts on bedsharing safely:
đ€La Leche League International recommends the Safe Sleep 7 when bedsharing: A mother that is smoke, alcohol, & drug-free, baby that is full-term & healthy, exclusively breastfed, on their back, and unswaddled/dressed lightly, and the sleep surface is firm & free of cords or wires with gaps covered and blankets/pillows moved aside.
đ€According to Cornell University, bedsharing promotes bonding, improves breastfeeding outcomes, reduces breathing irregularities, regulates babyâs temp, promotes more restful sleep for mom & baby, decreases incidences of postpartum depression & more.
đ€Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained & sudden death of an infant under 1 year. Suffocation & strangulation deaths from unsafe sleep surfaces IS NOT SIDS, although fear-based information promotes this connection.
đ€Co-Sleeping is defined as sleeping in a shared room which is recommended by the AAP until baby is at least 12 months old. Co-sleeping can be done without bedsharing & is part of the Back to Sleep Campaign from the World Health Organization.
Make sure your blanket stays below waist level and use a buttoned cardigan for easy night breastfeeding if you need to stay warm. Keep baby in a one-piece pajama and follow TOG guidelines!
We use the term âco-sleepingâ to talk about sleeping on the same surface as your baby. We understand that some people prefer to say âbed-sharingâ but beds arenât the only places where parents may sleep with their children.
-
Room-sharing is when a baby sleeps in the same room as their parent/carer but in a separate sleeping space such as a cot or Moses basket. We recommend babies should always sleep in the same room as you for the first 6mth, day and night.
The difference between how we think weâll parent and how we actually parent can be huge. For example, according to our 2023 survey, 91% of parents who have shared a bed with their baby whilst asleep didnât plan to co-sleep at all before their baby arrived!
-
There may be lots of unexpected reasons why families end up co-sleeping - baby wonât settle in a cot or Moses basket, being away from home with a different routine, even just being completely shattered and accidentally falling asleep with their baby.
-
But, this is why itâs really important for EVERY carer to be familiar with our advice on how to co-sleep more safely, regardless of whether you plan to co-sleep or not. https://bit.ly/3IYZcXK

Buffy Sainte-Marie shares what led to her openly breastfeeding on 'Sesame Street' in 1977 "I'm feeding the baby. See? He's drinking milk from my breast."
đ
I canât say Iâm shocked by this. Itâs the same place that medicalized birth. So why wouldnât they mess up how we feed our babies too?! Things to remember if you plan to birth in a hospital:
đ€±Itâs ok if your baby doesnât nurse right away. Babies donât know itâs been an hour since birth so they donât automatically latch on because a nurse thinks it should happen then.
đ€±Babies are so much smarter than we give them credit for. Many times, all that playing around & moving their hands is them learning to nurse their way.
đ€±Unswaddle your baby before you nurse them, even if their hands are by their face all the time. Skin to skin, belly to belly is important.
đ€±A good measure of input is their output. Obviously we canât see how much they are getting but if they p*e & p**p well than they are probably fine.
đ€±If you get IV fluids during labor than your babyâs weight is probably inflated. That can affect the percentage that they lose.
đ€±Nursing shouldnât hurt! Pain is an indicator that latch is off. You donât need to toughen up your ni***es.
đ€±If you suspect a tie & a nurse or pediatrician tells you there isnât one or it wouldnât affect breastfeeding, seek out lactation help outside the hospital.
đ€±You can nurse with inverted or flat ni***es. And that doesnât automatically mean you need a ni**le shield.
đ€±If you are thrown a ni**le shield in the hospital & you are reliant on it, you need to seek out lactation help. There should be a plan to fix the root cause & get you off the shield.
đ€±Forcing a baby to eat can cause them to associate eating with stress. If anyone is too rough while helping you nurse, ask for someone else.
đ€±You should be taught skills to nurse while at home. Just getting the baby to feed isnât good enough. The goal should be helping mom & baby find their rhythm.
đ€±Colostrum is the perfect food for your baby. Formula is not needed just because your mature milk isnât in yet.
đ€±If baby is not latching for whatever reason, there are ways to express & feed colostrum. A bottle of formula is not the only fix.
đ€±Babies donât feed on a schedule. Watch your baby instead of the clock. Someone waking you every 2 hours & forcing you to feed your baby isnât right & you can demand they leave you alone.
đ€±If something is off, get out-of-the -hospital lactation support.

This week I welcomed my sunrise baby Earthside in the most healing & redemptive delivery at home. My little Pixie Dust was assisted into this world with the incredible support of an amazing birth doula, a skilled & loving midwife & nurse team, and of course my loving husband.
I did not hire a doula for my first delivery and experienced a traumatic birthing center turned hospital birth. My experience inspired me to pursue my education as a postpartum doula. This time, I am so grateful that I had my doula to help me work through my birth trauma and an unexpected closure of my planned birthing location weeks before my delivery. She kept me grounded and focused and empowered me to approach my home birth with confidence, love, and peace.
I am so grateful and humbled by this experience. I could not possibly imagine a more beautiful way to welcome our new addition â„ïž

"On the first day with baby my doula gave to me:
She sat down and listened to me."
Sometimes you just need someone who will listen without trying to fix everything. A postpartum doula listens without judgment to the good, the bad, and the ugly of parenthood.
Whether you want to show me the trillion pictures you took at last night's midnight feed or vent for a while about feeling overwhelmed - I'm ready with open ears and an open heart.
