Happy 420. The h**p plant has a rich and ancient tradition behind it.

While H**p is Cannabis Sativa, it is not ma*****na. Here are some amazing facts about h**p!

1. H**p enriches the soil where it's grown.
H**p has such deep roots that it can easily grow in many different types of soil and terrains. It even holds the soil together, and increases its microbial content. Once the plant is harvested, the stem and leaves are so nutrient-filled that many farmers put what they don't use back in the soil, which rejuvenates it and resultes in an even bigger yield the next year.

2. H**p absorbs toxic metals.
H**p has shown it can eliminate toxins and radioactive material from the environment. Scientists planted it at Chernobyl and found that h**p conducted phytoremediation and removed chemicals from the soil better than any other plant.

3. H**p can reduce carbon emissions.
H**p can not only replace some of the causes of carbon emissions, h**p can eliminate carbon emissions. H**p has such a high carbon-dioxide uptake that it creates a process called carbon sequestration, which captures emissions. Every ton of h**p eliminates 1.63 tons of carbon, according to H**p Inc.

4. H**p can also help eliminate world hunger.
H**p seeds are one of the most nutritionally dense foods; they're a protein and contain amino acids and vitamins. They can also be made into oil or flour.

Charlotte Figi’s story shifted the paradigm of wellness and access for all, as the world watched through the empathetic eyes of Dr. Sanjay Gupta and his captivating docuseries, W**d. Charlotte’s impact remains the footprint of our path forward, toward care for all through the healing power of the earth. Her legacy became a foundation of education, research, and impact, one that grows its sphere of influence to an ever-expanding circle of seekers, families, and souls as they journey toward a more healing future. Charlotte's sudden and tragic passing at the age of thirteen on April 07, 2020, is a heavy reminder that life is precious, that the dignity of choice is critical, and that the courage of innocence is a guidepost for human wellness.

We are not even sure what to say.

The shooting at the King Soopers in Boulder yesterday absolutely broke our hearts, as we're sure it did for many of you. Many of our family, friends, and clients shop at that store, but were fortunately not there yesterday. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of the victims.

If anyone learns of a fund or organization that is going to provide support for the families of the victims, please let us know. We're planning to make a donation and do whatever we can to help those families.

It goes without saying that our communities and policies have to address the gun violence in this country. With seven mass shootings in the past week, enough is enough.

Meditation paired with the powerful effects of CBD can change how your brain and nervous system function.

The amygdala is the part of your brain in charge of processing fearful and anxious emotions. Studies are showing that CBD paired with meditation could be an alternative for treating anxiety disorders (and for overall mental health) due to how cannabinoids modulate the amygdala.

Few industries embody the successes and ongoing struggles in the fight for social justice, legal reform and inclusion more than Colorado’s cannabis industry.

Sarah Woodson, the executive director for The Color of Cannabis, knows that people of color have been negatively impacted by the war on drugs and cannabis prohibition. "Right now, there are places in the United States where people are spending 15, 20 years in prison for cannabis possession.”

According to a 2020 study by the American Civil Liberties Union, “Black people are 3.64 times more likely than white people to be arrested for ma*****na possession, notwithstanding comparable usage rates.” The analysis found that “in every single state, Black people were more likely to be arrested for ma*****na possession, and in some states, Black people were up to six, eight, or almost 10 times more likely to be arrested.”

Join us in an effort to donate and raise awareness to support social and criminal justice organizations such as Black Futures Lab, The Bail Project, Color of Change and the Minority Cannabis Business Association.

The pinene terpene is actually comprised of two sister terpenes: alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. Though there are two types, their molecular structure is identical, and they are found in many of the same plants. Alpha-pinene smells like pine needles and rosemary, while beta-pinene’s scent is more akin to dill or parsley. Beta-pinene is also found in allspice.*

The potential benefits of pinene are vast. Studies show that pinene can help protect the brain against short-term memory loss associated with ingesting THC. Another study showed that Alpha-pinene can help you breathe easier as it has been found to open the lung passages, possibly alleviating respiratory issues. Other benefits of pinene include its antimicrobial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties.*

Hops and cannabis/h**p are both in the taxonomic family Cannabaceae, and humulene plays a big role in providing the same aromatic notes to both species of plants.

Perhaps because of Humulene's presence in hops, the medical and therapeutic potential of this compound is expansive and well-researched. A 2016 study showed that it may help terminate cancer cells when combined with phytocannabinoids and other terpenes, evidenced by its ability to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).*

Humulene also plays an important function in the life cycle of a cannabis/h**p plants prior to harvest. Beginning with synthesis in the trichome head, humulene and other terpenes aid in a plant’s defense capabilities by helping to deter pests and prevent fungal infestations.*

Humulene may act as an antibacterial agent and has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. In small quantities, it has been shown to kill the S.aureus bacteria. A 2003 study showed that humulene, especially when acting in concert with other terpenes and cannabinoids, killed cancer cells. The most recent studies concluded that humulene was as effective of an anti-inflammatory as the steroidal drug dexamethasone.*

Further still, humulene is frequently invoked as an appetite suppressant, which may lead to more widespread use in the future.*

ASTHMA
Eucalyptol may also serve as an effective therapeutic when it comes to asthma. A 2012 paper published within the Journal of Asthma showed that Eucalyptol can result in improvement in lung function and health, and can reduce dyspnea in asthma patients.*

NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE
In a few studies eucalyptol was shown to mitigate inflammation in amyloid Beta toxicated PC12 cells, which suggests Eucalyptol may have be beneficial for use in therapy as an anti-inflammatory agent in neurodegenerative disease. (Khan, Neurochem Res., 2014) and (PubMed, Biosci, 2016).*

ANTIOXIDANT
Antioxidants act to neutralise free radicals within the system, preventing them from inflicting DNA damage through oxidation. Antioxidants are also associated with slowing down the ageing process and preventing heart disease and stroke.*

A 2011 study published within the journal Toxicology and Industrial Health administered Eucalyptol to rats who were exposed to a persistent environmental pollutant. The researchers concluded that Eucalyptol displayed antioxidant activity and eliminated oxidative stress.*

ANTI-CANCER
Perhaps the most profound aspect of Eucalyptol is the molecule’s potential anti-cancer properties. A 2002 paper published within Oncology Reports details an investigation in which Eucalyptol was administered to human leukemia cell lines. The researchers found that Eucalyptol suppressed the growth of the leukemia cell lines due to inducing apoptosis.*

Apoptosis is cell death and is required in the body to maintain normal cell turnover and proper function of the immune system. Too little or too much apoptosis can be the cause of numerous health conditions, including many types of cancers, which are the result of cell mutation. The potential ability of Eucalyptol to suppress cancer cell line growth and to induce apoptosis makes it a promising future therapeutic within the domain of cancer treatments.*

The research behind the potential benefits of Limonene:

STRESS RELIEF
Experiments in mice confirm limonene to be strongly anxiolytic, boosting serotonin levels in prefrontal cortex, and dopamine in hippocampus mediated via 5-HT1A receptors. Human clinical work also supports these activities. A study in Japan (Komori, Fujiwara, Tanida, Nomura, & Yokoyama, 1995), demonstrated that depressed patients exposed to citrus scent experienced normalization of Hamilton Depression Scores (HADS), allowing discontinuation of antidepressants in 9/12 hospitalized patients.*

COUNTERACT PSYCHOACTIVE EFFECTS OF THC
Limonene has an impressively supportive history as an “antidote” to excessive psychoactive adverse events produced by THC (Russo, 2011).*

ANTIBIOTIC
Limonene demonstrated prominent antibiotic effects vs S. aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Onawunmi, Yisak, & Ogunlana, 1984). Recently, concentrations of 400 μg/mL inhibited biofilm formation of the pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes SF370 and S. nutans, which produces dental caries, downregulating various genes mediating surface-associated proteins (Subramenium, Vijayakumar, & Pandian, 2015).*

CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC
Limonene also demonstrates chemotherapeutic properties, inducing apoptosis of breast cancer cells among others. It was utilized in high doses in Phase II RCTs (Vigushin et al., 1998), with good safety, but less impressive efficacy. A more recent study in humans demonstrated that, in women with preoperative breast cancer, an oral intake of 2 g of D-limonene a day produced a mean concentration of 41.3 μg/g of biopsy breast tissue, and reduced cyclin D1 expression that could lead to cell-cycle arrest and decreased proliferation (Miller et al., 2013).*

We are so encouraged by the promising research being done with beta-caryophyllene. Further research is of course necessary to fully understand the therapeutic benefits and effective doses needed for this terpene, but we have seen some encouraging case studies. We also always advise consulting with your physician or the doctor’s at .health before adding any new supplements into your regimen.*

Use this guide to help optimize your experience, especially for those seeking to hone in on the potential health-promoting effects of particular terpenes.

Beta-Caryophyllene may help to manage pain by reducing inflammation.

d-Limonene
Limonene infuses cannabis and h**p v***r with hints of citrus. This molecule makes the effects of THC more cerebral and euphoric. In animal studies, limonene reduced anxiety and boosted serotonin levels in the prefrontal cortex, as well as dopamine levels in the hippocampus.

Humulene
Humulene is a very common terpene in nature. In fact, beer would not be beer without the hoppy taste that humulene gives to the hop plant. Remedies in ancient Chinese apothecaries were notably high in humulene. It has been used as a sedative and as natural antibiotic, and a recent study concluded that the anti-inflammatory effects of humulene were as effective as the steroidal drug dexamethasone.

Eucalyptol
Eucalyptol is a fascinating terpene. It’s obviously one of the main components of eucalyptus, yet is quite rare in modern-day cannabis and h**p strains. This terpene has demonstrated possible anti-viral, painkilling, anti-fungal, antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Pinene
Pinene adds savory tastes of pine and rosemary. This terpene is associated with anti-anxiety effects and may help to prevent the adverse effects of THC, such as short-term memory impairment. It may also synergise with THC to increase airflow to the lungs.

Bisabolol
Bisabolol is only found in the chamomile flower and a few other plants, such as the candeia tree, and some cannabis and h**p strains. Bisabolol has a warm floral aroma similar to honey, apples, and chamomile. This terpene may have anti-inflammatory, anti-irritant, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, and analgesic properties.
