The serenade thru history from back then when you were chaperoned on dates . How many young women were persuaded to elope with artful dodgers as a result? Or was it then and still now an opportunity for starry eyed lovers to melt into one another? I like to believe the second version but of course there’s an infinity of versions… I’d like to attach a Carlos Gardel song still beautiful today

Buika - Jodida pero contenta (Directo Cueva Candela 06) 19/11/2021

Thank you everyone for liking this page! and my posts...
Last night I posted a recording by Diego la Cigala and Bebo Valdes, showing modern flamenco Cuban-style, with piano and sax and ,no guitars! So if you miss the guitars here's one with Buika singing "Jodida, pero contenta." It must be her own composition as the language is not flamenco-style - "Fu**ed (up) but happy." It's an angry denunciation of a lying ex-boyfriend, consistent with her book, dedicated to "Difficult women and the men who loved them and the dumped them." Listen:

Bebo Valdés & Diego El Cigala.- Lágrimas Negras 18/11/2021

Flamenco - "you know," i once admitted to an old friend - a former flamenco dancer and singer from Seville, "i always loved the guitarists, like Paco de Lucia, but the singing, meah, not so much." Then, some 20 years passed and in 2009 i was in Venezuela with a lovely Venezuelan lady, i remember, we had just rented the car for a long trip, it was very hot and dusty, i was anxious to leave but she insisted on going into a store to get
"supplies" one of which was a CD - She said we needed a CD to brand our trip and remember it by. i said ok, looking at the cover with no enthusiasm. Then, we listened to it, over and over, for nearly 3,000 kms in two weeks. so: surprise no.1 = no guitars, but the best Cuban jazz pianist of all time, in my book, Bebo Valdes. and then Diego el Cigala. a gypsy from the Canary Islands who sang with a thick Andalucian accent. He, and Bebo converted me. here's the classic Lagrimas Negras (Black Tears), performed in studio so you can watch Bebo's hands on the piano keys:

Lacreme Napulitane / Vurria. (Tradução) Z**i Possi 14/11/2021

"Vurria.." another neapolitan song by this Brazilian born singer... i loved it before i understood a word... for the musical drama of it...
but it narrates the nostalgia of so many millions of Europeans forced by poverty to leave their beloved homes, but inspired by dreams of a better life in "America." The visuals in this YouTube version evoke the experience of Z**i's parents, who emigrated from Napoli to Brazil, where she was born...
enjoy:

AS promised, one of my big "discoveries" since 2019; Z**i Possi, and everything to do with la musica e la lingua napolitana. thanks to my best friend in Sicily, Gdb:
Grazie mille, la mia vita sarebbe molto piu' povera senza di averte conosciuta!
and now I'm going to study neapolitan italiano. they have done to Italian what Argentina did to castellano Spanish... made it so much more musical...

Hi Friends and Welcome to this project: What I want to do with these pages…
I have a friend (TJ Mullen) who tastes wine for Forbes.com as well as his own blog: Vino Voices.
He has an excellent, educated palate. And he writes well.
So I thought I would try to do something similar, with music, with thought, things I know more about than wine, which incidentally, is so abundant and (relatively) cheap in this part of the world I could easily drown in it. Were it not for people like TJ.
And his taste is eclectic, like mine, even more so perhaps.
So I will “taste” for you, and recommend pairings, of music, not with food necessariy, but with other cultural products: art, cinema, books, and even love…
My taste in music extends from Patagonia to Poland, via the Caribbean, West Africa and southern Europe…and of course North America…
This idea came to me tonight as I listened to one of my playlists on Spotify: Soha (1), started 2 years ago when I was dating French women and wanted to find music we could both get attached to. Turns out Soha, from Marseille, also sings in Spanish, and the Portuguese and Hispanic additions to this “French” playlist soon outnumbered the French and Italian. The best of the French was from French Africa… and Z**i Possi, one of my great “discoveries” who sings in Napoletano as well as Portuguese, was born in Brazil of Italian immigrant parents from Napoli…
I will write later about why I think hispanic/portuguese/italian (from mezzogiorno down to Sicilia) music is so derving of your attention. And the idea here is not to replay stuff you have heard but to introduce you to and build audiences for great talent you may never have previously come across.
But your contributions are also welcome!! So please share… that’s the idea of all this sh*t isn’t it?
