YESTERDAY, I HAD SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT TECHNO.
(AND YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE IT) (BUT A LOT DID LIKE IT) Picture on the left: yesterday at terminal techno/pilar brussels approx 2:30am, Picture on the right: yesterday evening at open salon, sint-niklaas, approx 9:30pm.

After I shut down all equipment in the middle of my full set at RSO club Berlin last month and ranted a few minutes about the current state of techno in a spoken word section in the eerily silent club, I decided to make a rewritten 'sequel' yesterday during my live at Terminal Techno at VUB Pilar. Perfect place to say 'techno IS political', since Pilar is the concert hall of the University of Brussels. Yesterday evening I presented a brandnew spoken word project/book I am preparing at the moment at the OPEN SALON culture event organised by Laureline Soubry in Sint-Niklaas. This experimental spoken word project will include a.o. reflections I had/have during my live shows and the travels, but also texts like this. At the OPEN SALON I explained a bit deeper why TECHNO WAS, IS, AND ALWAYS WILL BE POLITICAL.

Here's the full text I have read in Brussels and Sint-Niklaas:

For some of you or probably most this is just another escape, but because it feels like one, it becomes your hidden political act even if you are not aware of that.

You are escaping from:

The normative society which is out there.
The rules implied upon you on a daily basis, rules which often make no sense and are never questioned, because they are taken for granted, often even for centuries.
So, unconsciously you have escaped tonight. This very dark night when you crawled right here and sure you will not share every story you’ll encounter here with just anybody out there.

Cause right now and here, all of you became a disruptive potential, a subgroup hidden under the radars of bourgeois self-imposed normality and obedience.

So why just limit ourselves to be unguided, uncontrolled, nihilist and hedonist individuals?

Reflect! And tell me why you should accept ‘your rejection to society’ being taken over and placed under control of a very similar sub-society which jumped all on top of your thing and sees it merely as another ‘business opportunity’.

Why would you accept the very same ‘rules’ and ‘order’ you were escaping from right now and here?

Tell me, why would you:

1. Accept a door policy when all you theoretically talk about is the need for more inclusion and less discrimination?

2. Why would you accept being treated at whatsoever club entrance as if you were a potential trouble maker? And why do you accept being judged there merely on how you look and what you wear? Or how old you are?

3. Why do you have to pay excessive door prices whilst so many walk in through the privileged guest list cue which became an openly dividing and visible-to-everyone thing at every so called ‘decent’ club? Which entrance did you take? Admit, does it feel ‘special’ if you could pass an entire cue every now and then? So all the rest could see how ‘important’ you are?

4. Why do you accept clubs programming utterly generic and non-dangerous artists, deejays and producers, in line-ups so pale, white and yes, for f***’s sake, male and consisting of friends-of-friends-of-friends who never would cause a fuzz, so the format of all formats can be night after night after night protected? How do you spell ‘boredom’?

5. Why would you not become more vocal about these issues you as such in theory care about, but when it comes to the point of reacting you always tend to shut up about them, not to cause any trouble? This is how authoritarian systems grow, take more, and more and more, up to the moment they have it all and no one can speak out at all any longer. Everyone who remains silent yet knows there is something wrong is part of the f***ing problem.

6. And last but not least: Why does everyone still accept so many predators in backstages and venues, only out there showing off their utterly boring and non-interesting but well produced, privileged rich-kid music which is only the pretext to execute their abusive behaviour, openly exposed, and their creation of their big sh**lists of yet another name to add, of people ‘they had’? Here's my well-meant and not so friendly biggest ‘f*** you’ I have for them in my bag full of rants.

TECHNO WAS, IS, AND WILL BE ALWAYS A POLITICAL MOVEMENT, WHETHER THEY LIKE IT OR NOT.
