INDEPENDENCE CEMETERY FENCE IS GOOD AS NEW

A broken section of the iconic rock fence that surrounds Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence has been made new with the help of an Augusta, Kan., masonry firm.

Last week, Daniel and Sons of Augusta completed repairs to a section of the fence that was demolished by an intoxicated driver in mid-December. Neil Daniel, left, said the rehabilitation did not require any new rock to fill in the broken section. All available rock from the fence was reincorporated into the wall.

"It's like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle," he said.

The fence was built as a Works Progress Administration project in the 1930s. Daniel said he enjoyed rehabilitating the historic fence to its previous condition.

"Because this was a WPA project, I am fascinated by the length of the fence and, of course, the various uses of the rock," he said. "I really enjoy rehabilitating stone structures."

Daniel also said he noticed the limestone rock was largely known as "field stone" as compared to stone that is cut from a quarry. He found rocks that contained ancient fossils.

"It appears most of this fence was made of field stone," he said. "That is what makes it even more fascinating."

Daniel said he anticipates doing more masonry work in the southeast Kansas region soon.
