Our wine of the week 🍷

Planted in 1994, situated in Marsaxlokk, the Marnisi Estate was the first in the series of Marsovin-owned Estates specifically intended for the production of premium quality wines. The Estate is spread across roughly 15 acres of land and is planted with over 50,000 vines, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The yields from this Estate are low thus guaranteeing the highest quality and depth of character.

Marnisi is a blend of all three grape varieties grown in the Marnisi Estate; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine is transferred unfiltered to oak barriques and aged with great care for a minimum of 12 months in our cellars. Due to its robust nature and solid structure Marnisi has excellent ageing potential.

We tried a 2018 Marnisi back in 2019, and it has really evolved over the years. The wine started off as a medium bodied, semi dry red, with berry and earthy notes and was surprisingly perfect with fish such as sword fish. It has now grown into a well rounded, full bodied, robust red, with a strong presence of red berries. It has a long finish on the pallet and maintains it's semi dry characteristics making it an astonishing wine when pared with food. It is also Malta's only certified organic wine. The 2018 Marnisi is highly recommended by Malta Wine Tours and sits in out top 10 favorite wines in the world!

Girgentina is the only white grape native to Malta and is one of only two indigenous varieties on this small island. Typical Girgentina wines tend to be light in both body and alcohol, and have a delicately floral aroma, which is not a common characteristic for warm weather grown white grapes. It’s a perfectly refreshing glass of wine during Malta’s hot summer evenings.

🍇 This dark skinned variety of grape is one of the two native grapes to Malta. Ġellewża is used to make still red wines, as well as a semi-sparkling rosé. The strawberry-tinged sparkling rosés are often made in a medium dry style, with red fruit aromas to the fore. The red wines tend to be medium bodied, but Ġellewża is increasingly found in blends, together with Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon to make a more full-bodied wine. Ġellewża often acts to soften the spiciness of the wine and add a bright cherry flavour.
