MIKEL ARTETA EXPLAINS WHY ARSENAL BOUGHT BEN WHITE:
🗣️“We bought him because we believe that he can be extraordinary and he doesn’t have that much experience in the league still.
“After that we bought him because he has that ability to break lines, to progress the ball the way we want it. He has that composure and calmness to make the right decision. But first of all he needs to defend and I think he is doing that really, really well.”

A real gaffer
Today in 1986 George Graham made his Arsenal managerial debut in a 1-0 win versus Manchester City after being appointed in May.
George Graham was born in Bargeddie, Glasgow, Scotland on the 30th November 1944, the youngest of seven children, George grew up in poverty in Bargeddie, near Coatbridge. He showed considerable promise as a footballer, and clubs like Newcastle United, Chelsea and Aston Villa showed an interest in his talent.
He signed for Aston Villa in 1961, on his 17th birthday and spent three seasons at the Birmingham club, making only eight appearances. Chelsea signed him in 1964 for £5000. George scored 35 goals in 72 league games for the club and won a League Cup medal in 1965, but he fell out with the Chelsea’s manager, Tommy Docherty. At the same time, Arsenal were looking for a replacement for Joe Baker, and paid £75,000 plus Tommy Baldwin in 1966 to bring George to Highbury. He made his debut on 1 October 1966 at home to Leicester City and soon became a regular in the Arsenal side. He was Arsenal’s top scorer in both 1966–67 and 1967–68, having started out as a centre forward for the club, but later moved to inside forward.
He was a runner-up in both the 1968 and 1969 League Cup finals, before finally winning a medal in the 1969–70, Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. He followed it up with being an integral part of Arsenal’s Double-winning side of 1970–71, and even had a claim to scoring Arsenal’s equaliser in the FA Cup Final against Liverpool, although Eddie Kelly is officially credited with the goal.
Winning the “Double” brought the attention of Scotland and he was selected for the national side for the first time against Portugal in 1971. He would go on to win twelve caps over the next two years for Scotland, scoring three goals, his final one coming against Brazil, by this time he was no longer an Arsenal player. The arrival of Alan Ball made his position at Arsenal less assured so he moved to Manchester United in December 1972 for £120,000. He spent two years at United, and was relegated to Division Two, before seeing out his career in England at Portsmouth and Crystal Palace. He played the summer of 1978 in America for the California Surf.
After retiring from playing, he became a coach at Crystal Palace and then later Queens Park Rangers. With the dismissal of Don Howe as Arsenal manager in March 1986, the Arsenal directors were interested in appointing Alex Ferguson, as their new manager with Graham as his assistant. However, Ferguson decided to wait until after the World Cup that summer before making a decision on his future, and so the Arsenal directors appointed Graham as their new manager on 14 May 1986.
George Graham let some of the older players go and bought in his own players. He was known from the off as a disciplinarian – and has been accused of being unpleasant in his handling of players. George was renowned for his no nonsense style and many ex-players and others have told their stories. One of the most scathing was an interview with Anders Limpar. http://www.theguardian.com/.../anders-limpar-george...
His first achievement was to have Arsenal top of the league at the time of their traditional 100 year anniversary – Xmas 1986.
The club slipped back to fourth but there was clear improvement over previous campaigns especially winning the League Cup with a Charlie Nicholas double over the then mighty Liverpool . Although the defeat in the second league cup final to Luton the following season, after being ahead, was shocking, and there were questions over some of his players, the results were clearly better than under previous managers, and I think we were all hopeful at the time.
Of the players we particularly remember the gathering together of the Dixon, Adams, Bould, Winterburn back four. The media of course turned this into a defensive only team (Boring Boring Arsenal indeed) but with Rocastle, Thomas, Merson and Smith playing ahead of that back four it was anything but.
And so George Graham, having won the league in 1971 as a player, was amazingly the manager for the next time we won the League in 1989, in a match described so often that there can’t be anything else to say.
The second title in 1991 is not exactly forgotten, but because of the Liverpool victory two years previous it gets less publicity. And yet it had something extra, for Arsenal had 2 points deducted for a minor punch up at Manchester. It was a wholly outrageous punishment, but Arsenal got their own back on Man U, for it was they who had to provide a guard of honour on 6 May, with Arsenal having won the league.
It was also a nice retribution for the 1990/91 defeat in the league cup at Highbury where Man U beat Arsenal 6-2.
David Seaman and Anders Limpar came in for that season, and Ian Wright followed from Palace the season after.
But then we started to see the signs of decline – a poor defeat to Benfica at home in extra time in the Euro cup showed how far below the European standard English football was, following the years of exile after Liverpool fans riot at Heysel. An FA Cup defeat to Wrexham was worse.
It was only then that the real emphasis on defence happened. By now the back four were so used to each other that they could be relied on totally – but there was no way of getting the ball forwards quickly. From 81 goals in 1991/92 Arsenal sank down to 40 in 1992/3.
But there were still more triumphs: the first club to win the FA Cup and the League Cup in the same season, and then there were the two Cup Winners Cup finals, winning one, losing the second (Houston being caretaker manager)
On February 21, 1995 George Graham given his marching orders from the Arsenal Manager’s Office. At the time, Arsenal were struggling a little in the league, had lost a League Cup quarter final to Liverpool, been dumped out of the FA Cup after a third round replay by Millwall, and (as Cup Winners’ Cup holders) had also lost the Super Cup to AC Milan. But of course all that had no bearing on George’s sacking, which was more down to brown envelopes of cash, as the word ‘bung’ embedded itself in the football lexicon. He admitted that he had accepted £425,000 from Rune Hauge in the transfer in of Jensen and Lydersen. Graham repaid the money, but was eventually banned for a year by the Football Association.
George managed four clubs: Millwall, Arsenal, Leeds, and Tottenham. His win percentage at Arsenal (48.91%) was the best of his career. At Tottenham it was 39.68%.
As a player, he played 308 matches for Arsenal, scoring 77 goals and was voted by fans at number 42 in Arsenal's 50 Greatest Players.
