Today is the day!

Recorded November 2022 - October 2023, straight to tape, Owen Sound ON

Thresher's latest full-length release was conceived from the finer points of over 30 hours worth of material, captured live in their rehearsal space. The narrative of improvisation runs deep and true through this release; continuing in their theme of unapologetic, entirely improv experimental music, Thresher has come back to the table with a fresh sound and a few additional members to credit with the sculptures herein. The arrangement plays through some of the most tender and forgiving content that Thresher has committed to tape, diametrically opposed by some of the most dense, polyrhythmic, and heavy material conceived by the band. Sounds of all living things. Sounds of the inanimate. Momentary Dharma.

We're extremely excited to present the forthcoming Thresher album Wheels W/In Wheels!

Named after a quote from on his blog to describe the bands "tripped out swirls of rhythm," Thresher expands on their collage-style albums recorded to unforgiving tape. Fusing elements of kosmische music, free jazz, and post-rock they offer a bad trip wrapped in a security blanket.

The album will be released digitally and as a limited edition LP (thanks to .ca for their care with this project) some copies will include a bonus handpainted CD, a live recording from the band's set.

We're also excited to show the music video for the title track created by Sarah and Andy

To celebrate, please join us on the April 5th release day for a show with our new friends in DAUNTS!

Hey OwnSounders!

We have a really nice piece for you today - part teaser, part artifact from the lovely Dave Snider. A real tender and raw set that has left me wanting more every time I've listened. An experienced delivery of some intimately crafted tunes that tend to implant in your ears in melodious form for days after.

In Dave's own words: "A few sweet, caught moments here, from a concert in November 2023 at Heartwood Hall in Owen Sound, with Halifax's Public Service Duo and Guelph's Midswim. These songs comprise thoughts on slowly stepping into yer essence by way of grief, sorrow, redemption and love. 'Flares' is from the Magpie album High Plains. 'Concessions,' 'Seasons,' and 'Human Nature' are from the forthcoming Magpie album, to be released sometime in 2024."

Be sure to check out Dave's most recent project Magpie and their releases (catch a show, if you can - they don't disappoint), and stay tuned for their forthcoming.

Stay warm,

OwnSound.

That's a wrap on 2023! Thanks for a great year that saw a solid number of releases and a nice bunch of Thresher shows.

A quick hibernation, but we have a few irons in the fire for 2024!

Frig, another OwnSound December – hoping this warms things up a pinch.

Reissues of the Clock Strikes Music swan song: The ‘Heavy Heavy Roots EP’, and the closely following ‘Live at the Rainbow’, that chronicles in splendid, breakneck, white knuckle fashion the final breath of what was/is/will always be Clock Strikes.

The Heavy Heavy Roots EP is a very interesting release in hindsight – off the bat, it is hardcore…right back to the roots of Clock Strikes. Then, almost as if all is forgotten, it settles into 2 sublime reggae/ska infused tunes that could convince you this is a split release of 2 bands with 2 identities. This is a rare achievement, in my experience, to hold masterclass in 2 houses that certainly overlap but do not share an origin story. The band is refined here. Evidence of touring, live shows, countless rehearsals and leaps and bounds in songwriting and execution can all be heard here. It’s heartbreaking in a sense, considering what came next. As a snapshot, the Heavy Heavy Roots EP is a stellar moment in time.

Recorded live at the Rainbow in Ottawa ON, in August 2008, ‘Rainbow’ serves as a summation of the band not only at their peak formation, but in a state of undoing. From the first minute of 40oz King from ‘Live at the Rainbow’, there is a palpable nerve in the air that sounds like the ungluing of all that came before it – a gut wrenching reminder that all things pass, can be heard in the band sounding-it-out through a beauty improv warm up. Not a lick of apathy here though - The crew quickly settles into a well-rehearsed dialect, and truly never misses a beat start to finish. There are moments of unchained improv (see Hardcore 81), offset by soulful reggae exercises (Time a Go Dread), and enthusiastic newer punk tune excursions like Song In Yer Name followed by Town In Defeat that sound like stories jumping off a page (hear Ben Harris’s voice crack with a cathartic tear on Town in Defeat – sincerely special). As the ‘Rainbow’ set tears on, the latter half is dominated by a staple string of tunes that the band has since been remembered for. Not to understate, but you should hear it for yourself.

Happy Holidays.

OwnSound.

G’Day Folks,

Another very special day around here: reissues of Clock Strikes’ formidable Lost and Found EP and the Clock Strikes Music full-length available for streaming and digital download!!! This is reissue release 2 of 3 of the incredible back catalog of Clock Strikes. Today’s releases were originally released in 2005 and 2007 respectively (both on CD), and the growth curve evident between them is wild and worth taking note of. The Lost and Found EP picks up in familiar but sophisticated scrappy punk/ska infused territory, with an applied science of ‘love-in-the-face-of’ politically charged lyrics and a healthy dose of not giving too many f***s. I certainly remember being utterly shaken and deafened at a live show around this time – one I won’t forget. The Clock Strikes Music full-length is perhaps the linchpin release that tied together legions of fans at countless live shows and around blaring car stereos in the summer of 2007. Songs like Litigation Mania, Foundation etc. were (are?) as catchy as they were entirely soulful and unapologetic. This one remains on my own personal formative years list of releases that changed the course of my own musical journey. I can’t talk about this release without mentioning how the vibe matured from the previous releases. Dialed in, tidy poetry, guitar sounds that transcend punk/ska and the rhythm section embracing more scope in the realm of soul, pop and ska/dub leanings. Something that only a band seriously invested in their writing and performing process could pull off, and they pulled it off with a dutiful blast of earworms I still mumble under my breath almost 20 years later. Stay tuned for the 3rd installment later in the year!

Dear OwnSound’rs

Today, We’re looking back to a special time locally, circa 2000, where punk rock ruled a hard fought DIY scene, and a small handful of dedicated folks battled to keep live shows from imploding, with the help of MANY local business sponsors and generous proprietors that were liberal with their spaces – all with the goal of helping some kids put some noise into the ether, and discover a lifelong journey of churning out self-expression in the form of hardcore. Doubts exist that hindsight captures the romance of it all: The energy evident on the Tofu Kitchen EP and the Clock Strikes - Leaving the World Behind full length speaks for itself. Songs full of hope, frustration, love, hard choices outline the punk sensibilities. The building blocks are here of what came later, as the band grew and evolved and continued to hone their craft. The evident influence of the heavenly Propagandhi is a clear nod to a greater voice yearning of an alternative Utopia that feels just beyond the edge of the lyric sheet, and the world dying to be left behind. it’s possible we’ve all felt that way about our own backyard at some point in our lives, especially as kids. It’s a rare pleasure to share these releases with you all again – frankly, they’re lively as all hell, and still raise the hair on my arms. This will be release 1 of a series of 3 total, that will feature additional Clock Strikes reissues. Release dates TBD – stay tuned for the whole collection!
