“This is my little lock down countryside miracle, my darling Peanut 🥜 he was rescued from the middle of the garden where the dogs were. After searching & waiting for signs of parents, bird rehab said to take him in. It was during the last lockdown and the bird rescues were full.
So with the guidance of a wonderful rehabber & amazing rescue lady.... We cared for him here in our home. He was extremely weak the first day and I was certain he wouldn’t make it. I had to force feed that day as he was too weak to open his beak. He needed feeding round the clock.
But day by day he grew stronger.
He started to thrive and we adored him.
Soon once strong after several weeks it was time to wean him and begin thereafter a soft release back into the garden. He would be still fed under wing in the wild so we continued to feed when he wanted.
He loved us and would fly to me no matter where I was in the garden for his meal worms 🐛 ❤️ but he began to forage for himself more and more. He would fly back to us to take him to his crate for bed time.
Day by day he gained confidence and soon wanted to roost outside.
I was sooooo worried! But he was becoming more and more confident.
Daily he needed us less and less.
We would watch him from the window after he stopped feeding from me with the other birds at the bird feeding area on our patio.
He is now one of the dunnock gang in our garden. I actually think he may have found his family as he was accepted by them so fast! Totally wild and free and still adored by us today. We take huge pleasure watching him feed with all the other garden birds. He no longer comes to us at all but it is as it’s meant to be.
We have several dunnock (like him) they are now on the Amber list of birds.
We have robins. Chaffinch, woodpeckers, greenfinch, great tit, blue t**s etc
I was absolutely chuffed to bits today to be told that he is in the running top 5 of this competition. My birds would love to win such a generous prize!”
