As someone whose family was assimilated decades ago and only truly learned the impact colonialism had on people that were her ancestors, recently in school, every time I look at that sign I fight back tears. Tears for oppression, discrimination and complete disregard for Canadian history.⠀
⠀
When I was young my mother and grandmother always taught me that I was French Canadian. A defense mechanism I am assuming my grandmother took on as a woman from a small town who married and raised children in a time where class and wealth were of utmost importance. ⠀
⠀
According to the family tree provided to me by my grandfather, my great-great-grandmother is Anastasia Montreuil, born July 20, 1881, in Algonquin Park. Anastasia was Metis, polyethnic people, who emerged through the relations of Indian women (Algonquin in my case) and European men (French in my case).⠀
⠀
Just like the Wet'suwet'en today, the Metis fought for their land. In 1869 (Yup, 151 years ago!)the new Canadian Aboriginal peoples' land (Red River) was sold without consulting the people who lived on it. Louis Reil and his provisional government fought for their land just like the Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs and their people do today. Two days ago RCMP officers, in tactical gear, entered the Wet'suwet'en territory and began arresting people protecting their title rights. ⠀
⠀
This is discrimination to the nth degree and it needs to stop! Blocking the Coastal GasLink Pipeline is their right, that land is Wet'suwet'en territory and they did not cede it. The forceful occupation of this land is medieval and an attack on Canadian heritage. ⠀
⠀
Discrimination is hurtful, stop trying to be right, and let us understand the point of view of those we impose ourselves upon. No one truly knows how the Wet'suwet'en feel - it is their land, their right, and our history being trampled upon.⠀
